Sashimi takeout for a Tapdong Square picnic in Jeju: Dutumhoe

Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch is a sashimi and sushi takeout shop at the Gate 8 night market entrance of Dongmun Market in Jeju City. On an outing with a friend, a Jeju local packed flatfish sashimi (30,000 won), special sushi (15,000 won), single-plate sushi (9,000 won) and coconut shrimp tempura (10,000 won) on ice packs and enjoyed the thick, chewy flatfish and nutty shrimp. In the pricey Dongmun Night Market, Dutumhoe is an affordable takeout spot for trying small portions of several kinds of sashimi.

Jungmun, Jeju Korean restaurant after a valley swim: garden in August

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥) is a Korean restaurant specializing in mackerel ssam-bap (rice eaten in leafy wraps), set in a 3,800-pyeong garden on Iljuseo-ro in Sanggye-dong, Seogwipo. After swimming at Seogwipo Valley, a family of four including the writer's parents ordered fatty grilled mackerel with abalone stone-pot rice for 18,000 won and aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap with abalone stone-pot rice for three for 54,000 won, along with a self-serve bar of 15 side dishes and leafy greens. Even in August, the Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap garden still had plenty of flowers, making it a good spot for a walk after the meal.
