Jungmun, Jeju Korean restaurant after a valley swim: garden in August

In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥) is a Korean restaurant specializing in mackerel ssam-bap (rice eaten in leafy wraps), set in a 3,800-pyeong garden on Iljuseo-ro in Sanggye-dong, Seogwipo. After swimming at Seogwipo Valley, a family of four including the writer's parents ordered fatty grilled mackerel with abalone stone-pot rice for 18,000 won and aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap with abalone stone-pot rice for three for 54,000 won, along with a self-serve bar of 15 side dishes and leafy greens. Even in August, the Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap garden still had plenty of flowers, making it a good spot for a walk after the meal.

What is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap?

Today I visited Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap in Jungmun, famous for its braised mackerel with aged kimchi (묵은지고등어찜)!! This place is known for its delicious ssam-bap (lettuce-wrapped rice), but it's also really famous for its 3,800-pyeong garden!! With a rose tunnel that makes it a summer hotspot 💗 Let's get into it~

If you're traveling Jeju and want to eat great local food while also enjoying pretty flowers all in one stop? I'd recommend Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, near the Jungmun Tourist Complex on Jeju 🤍 With a 3,800-pyeong garden, it's a great place to bring your parents or older family too~

I visited with my parents today! And as expected, they were happy with both the menu and the garden ✨

It's about a 5-minute drive from the Jungmun Tourist Complex, about 10 minutes from Daepo Jusangjeolli (columnar joints), and about 15 minutes from Seogwipo Natural Recreation Forest, so it's in a convenient spot to stop for a meal during a Jeju trip~

Garden and spacious private parking lot at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

We visited today after swimming at Seogwipo Valley! The parking lot is spacious, so there's no need to worry about parking at all.

In May, this rose tunnel is the signature spot here!! Isn't it so pretty? This path actually stretches on for quite a while 💗💗

As of August, they were still blooming like this. I thought they'd all be gone by now, but there were still plenty left~

Interior and seating

The restaurant is quite large too~ 🤍 With up to 480 seats, it has plenty of room for family gatherings or groups of tourists. There's a waiting lounge so you can wait comfortably!!

They also have amenities like high chairs, a waiting area, and wifi, plus a wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating, and restroom, I'm told~

I thought this was a place that could comfortably handle everything from family visits to group tours!! The view of flowers out the window was also lovely and relaxing ✨🧚🏻

What's on the menu and how much does it cost?

A go-to spot on any list of Jeju places worth visiting, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has a variety of dishes representing Jeju! With abalone stone-pot rice as part of the set, it's a really filling, satisfying meal~

For under 20,000 won per person, you can try mackerel ssam-bap with aged kimchi, abalone stone-pot rice, and 15 kinds of banchan (side dishes) here.

Set menu board and price list at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

I'm told Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has been featured on shows like <Live Tonight> and <Saturday Is Good for Rice>. It's a spot that's gotten word-of-mouth buzz among Jeju travelers, great for when you want a proper, satisfying Jeju meal 🤍

The most popular item here is the boneless flower mackerel braised with aged kimchi. Since it's sold limited to only 30 servings a day, I'd recommend ordering a bit quickly if you visit.

Self-serve bar with 15 side dishes and leafy greens

Another thing I really liked about Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was the more than 15 kinds of banchan~! On top of the several side dishes that come as standard, there's a self-serve bar too, so there are almost as many side dishes as a Korean buffet.

15-dish self-serve banchan bar laid out like a Korean buffet

It's not just one or two side dishes prepared — there are as many as 15 different kinds ready, so you can pick out whatever suits your taste and bring it over. Since they're handmade, the seasoning isn't too strong, and you can taste the care that went into them!!

Table of standard handmade side dishes

On top of that, fresh vegetables grown right on their own farm! They had various leafy greens ready for wraps — napa cabbage, kale, chicory, and more~

The standard banchan included black pork stir-fry, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), and homemade sikhye (sweet rice drink), among other things~ The pork stir-fry and homemade sikhye... totally my taste!! 🤍

If you join their event, you can even get free abalone porridge~ Isn't that really generous?? ✨🌟

This is what we brought over from the self-bar! Even before the main dishes showed up, the table was already full~ 🤤🤍

More than anything, the vegetables were in top-notch condition, so wrapping them up and eating was so crunchy and good~

We started with a wrap of black pork stir-fry~ haha. From dishes the adults love to ones that suit kids' tastes, it was so generous, I really loved it 🤍

Our order for four: grilled mackerel and aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap

Fatty grilled mackerel + abalone stone-pot rice ₩18,000 / Aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap + abalone stone-pot rice (for 3) ₩54,000

We ordered like this for our party of four!

At Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, you can enjoy a hearty Jeju meal starting from 13,000 won per person, and with the boneless flower mackerel braised with aged kimchi limited to 30 servings a day, plus abalone stone-pot rice, grilled mackerel, grilled tilefish, and more, there was a wide range of choices.

A whole big grilled mackerel, a big braised mackerel wrapped in aged kimchi, plus abalone stone-pot rice all showed up 🌟

First off, the portions were really generous! The grilled mackerel was large and well-grilled, looking nice and moist.

With the aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap, the mackerel was hidden inside a big piece of aged kimchi~ Maybe because of that, it had soaked up the seasoning and was moist and delicious!!

I tore the aged kimchi lengthwise into strips and wrapped it around rice to eat ~!! 🤍

On top of that, the rice was abalone stone-pot rice, which made it even more delicious. Inside the stone pot, the abalone was cut into bite-sized pieces, and eating a spoonful together with the rice, you could feel the chewy texture of the abalone and its rich, briny flavor along with a clean taste~

The stone-pot rice was chewy and nutty~

But the real highlight of stone-pot rice is definitely the scorched rice at the end! After scooping out the rice, I poured hot water into the pot and left it to soak for a bit ✨

The mackerel flesh in the aged kimchi ssam-bap was cooked tender and moist with no fishy taste at all, clean but savory, and the well-fermented kimchi had really soaked up the seasoning, tangy with deep umami~

Tender, well-cooked aged kimchi mackerel flesh

Eating it together with the plump abalone rice was truly excellent~!! The abalone rice was nutty enough to enjoy on its own, and it was also great wrapped in seaweed ✨

The grilled mackerel that came out golden-brown was crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside!!

With the aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap, the rich flavor of the kimchi blended with the mackerel's savory fattiness, each balancing out the other's flavor! The seasoning wasn't too spicy or salty, but had just the right umami to go with rice, and I kept reaching for more 🤍

I also wrapped it up in a lettuce leaf, and with the braised radish served alongside... 🤍 it went together so well

The grilled mackerel went even better together with the pickled chili peppers that came with it~!! The pickled chili had such a spicy-sweet charm to it

Lastly, I had the scorched rice tea (sungnyung) and the homemade sikhye! The scorched rice was so nutty I wondered if someone had secretly poured in a ton of sesame oil

And this place's sikhye is love 🤍 Even when I want sikhye, the store-bought kind is often too sweet to reach for, but I scooped up cup after cup of this place's sikhye!!

A go-to spot on any list of Jeju places worth visiting, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap runs a discount event in partnership with nearby attractions, which would be great for families visiting with kids to try~

A 3,500-pyeong garden still in bloom in August

Lastly, personally one of the biggest advantages of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is that you don't have to leave right after eating! You can take your time strolling through the 3,500-pyeong garden in front of the restaurant and feel Jeju's nature

Even in August there were really a lot of flowers in bloom!!

In spring it's canola flowers and roses, in summer hydrangeas, and in fall pink muhly grass — I'm told you can meet different flowers and scenery depending on the season.

Especially with the pink muhly season coming soon in September, you could enjoy a delicious meal and take pretty photos too, which would make for a great stop on a Jeju trip.

During hydrangea season, it's absolutely wild here!! So pretty right?? It was so pretty I brought these photos over from the owner's Instagram

In Jeju, even the same spot changes mood with each season, so there's fun in timing your trip to the flowers, and this place is appealing because you can handle both the meal and the flower-viewing at once~

Pink muhly season is coming soon, so definitely enjoy some photos of a lifetime here in September!! 💗

Final verdict

✅ Simmani's verdict: A go-to spot on any list of Jeju places worth visiting, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap felt less like a simple mackerel ssam-bap restaurant and more like a space to enjoy Jeju's food and nature together. You get a variety of banchan and fresh wrap vegetables, plus the well-seasoned aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap was even better eaten with the abalone stone-pot rice!! The grilled fish was moist and crispy, right to my taste ~ 🤍 It can also accommodate groups, so I'd recommend it while traveling. How about a meal today — Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, a Jeju restaurant worth visiting that also serves breakfast?
