A picky food collector's honest review of Wongiok — a Korean restaurant find near Gwanghwamun Station!!!
I've been searching hard lately for a good spot near home for sangyeonrye (the first formal meeting between two families before a wedding). Since it's a meal with parents and elders, taste matters but so does the vibe, the rooms, and the food lineup. That's how I found Wongiok Gwanghwamun.
There are so many Korean restaurants around Gwanghwamun that at first I figured this was just another decent hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) place. I'm honestly picky when picking restaurants and rarely say everything was amazing, but here... every single main dish was so good haha. I meant to eat moderately but ended up eating way too much and leaving stuffed.
So today I want to introduce this place especially to anyone hunting for a Gwanghwamun restaurant for sangyeonrye or a meal with parents.
Where Wongiok Gwanghwamun is and its opening hours

Wongiok Gwanghwamun is in the basement level (B1) at 10 Saemunan-ro 2-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, open Monday to Saturday 11:30–22:00. There's a break time from 15:00–17:00, last order at 20:45, and it's closed every Sunday.
It's about a 9-minute walk from Exit 6 of Gwanghwamun Station, though because of ongoing construction it's easier to cross from Exit 5. It's also about 9 minutes from Exit 5 of Seodaemun Station.

It's on the basement floor of the D-Plus building, so you just walk into the building and head down. Deoksugung Palace, Gyeonghuigung Palace, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Jeongdong-gil, and the Seoul Museum of History are all nearby, so it's a great spot to combine with sightseeing before or after the meal. Finding a place like this while hunting for Gwanghwamun restaurants gave me a weird sense of pride haha.
Wongiok Gwanghwamun menu and prices

The menu is split into main dishes, side dishes, meals, and set menus. Mains include hanwoo sirloin bulgogi at ₩33,000, spicy trio hot plate at ₩38,000, charcoal-grilled short ribs at ₩59,000, premium hanwoo strip loin at ₩45,000, plus the Wongiok stamina hot pot and hanwoo beef tartare.
- Side dishes: Roseu pyeonchae with mustard vegetables ₩18,000 / +₩29,000 premium hanwoo beef tartare / cold jeyuk whole ₩27,000, half ₩14,000 / hanwoo beef jeon ₩28,000 / whole water dropwort jeon ₩24,000 / stir-fried octopus ₩24,000 / fried peppers 2pc ₩9,000 / nutrition hot pot rice ₩15,000 / steamed dumplings 4pc ₩9,000
- Meals: gomtang ₩15,000/₩18,000 / red spicy soup ₩15,000/₩18,000 / makguksu cold or mixed ₩14,000 / beef tartare bibimbap ₩18,000 / octopus rice bowl ₩18,000
- Set menus: value set ₩80,000 / hearty set ₩110,000 / family set ₩180,000 / Wongiok chef's choice per person ₩80,000

Looking at the menu, options like the chef's choice or value set are well put together for trying several dishes at once. For occasions like sangyeonrye or family outings where choosing is tricky, a set menu seemed like a safe bet.
But the beef tartare looked way too good haha, so we ended up hand-picking our own dishes anyway. That day we ordered the Wongiok stamina hot pot, hanwoo beef tartare, and roseu pyeonchae with mustard vegetables, and even refilled the pollack sashimi salad side dish.
How many fit in the rooms? Suitable for sangyeonrye and work dinners?
Wongiok Gwanghwamun has rooms for 4, 6, 8, and up to 12 people, plus group seating. It's in the basement of the building, but the moment you walk in, it's far cleaner and more upscale than expected. The rooms in particular are really well done.
It seemed great for family gatherings or sangyeonrye. Even the open hall seating, not just the rooms, has generous spacing between tables, so we could eat without being bothered by the next table.

The overall mood is quiet and calm, which suited an important occasion well. When you're looking for a restaurant to take your parents to, this kind of detail matters a lot.
It's no fun if the food is great but it's too loud to talk — here, we could easily chat while eating. Wongiok also uses 1++ grade hanwoo beef and makes its own sauces and kimchi in-house. The kitchen staff apparently have long careers making the food themselves, which raised my expectations even more. I get why people looking for hanjeongsik near Gwanghwamun prefer a place like this.
Banchan, cold boiled pork and japchae at Wongiok Gwanghwamun
This was our first order — we added more later. I'm not usually a big eater, but everything was seriously, seriously good.

You can add more dishes like this. The menu is split into mains and sides, and though I considered the chef's choice or value set, I figured — a place this serious about its food deserves letting me pick what I actually want to eat.
The banchan (side dishes) alone were seriously done right. Kimchi, white kimchi, radish, yuzu salad, cold jeyuk, japchae, and pollack sashimi salad all came out, and honestly the side dishes won me over first.

When the kimchi is good, my expectations for the whole restaurant go up — and here even the kimchi was great haha. The cold jeyuk especially had a nice chewy texture with no gamey smell at all, and the japchae noodles were cooked just right. A lot of places serve japchae with noodles gone soft, but this one stayed pleasantly chewy, so I kept reaching for more.
Wongiok stamina hot pot: what's in it and how the broth tastes
The Wongiok stamina hot pot was one of the dishes I was most looking forward to that day. Inside were beef tendon, beef intestine, ox tongue, hanwoo boiled beef, mushrooms, napa cabbage, and various vegetables.

It wasn't a huge portion, but the ingredients were so packed in that it worked well for two people. I especially loved how much mushroom and vegetable there was.
The meats inside had clearly been simmered a long time and were incredibly tender. The beef tendon wasn't tough at all, the intestine was soft, and it was fun picking through the ox tongue and boiled hanwoo beef. But what really surprised me was the broth.
It was a clear but deeply flavored hanwoo bone broth — not an intense, punchy broth, but that distinct deep, clean flavor you get from beef bones simmered a long time. It paired so well with the hot pot ingredients that I kept going back for more broth.

And... we refilled the vegetables one more time haha. Because once the vegetables soften in the broth, they get so delicious. Eating vegetables along with the meat instead of just meat the whole time was so much better. In the end we refilled the vegetables and kept spooning up the broth.
Ros pyeonchae with mustard greens, 18,000 won: the best dish of the day
Roseu pyeonchae with mustard vegetables was ₩18,000, and it was the freshest-tasting dish of the day.

I'd honestly never tried this dish before, and it turned out to be exactly my style. The roseu (thin-sliced beef) comes in a mildly sweet sauce, with a texture like beef sashimi — soft but with a hint of a lightly cooked bite.
It's served with radish, cucumber, and shrimp, giving it a refreshing, clean finish. It looks similar to yangjangpi (a Korean-Chinese cold platter), but it's much lighter and cleaner in flavor.

I liked this dish so much I'd genuinely come back just for it. Total hit for my taste haha. We only ordered it thinking we'd try something new, and somehow it turned into the best dish of the day. If you're hunting for a sangyeonrye restaurant, a dish like this is great for sharing among a group.
It's Korean food, but not just the usual dishes everyone's had a hundred times — having something a bit special like this made the meal more fun.
Hanwoo beef tartare and seasoned pollack salad
The Wongiok hanwoo beef tartare is a dish I really want to recommend. Please order this if you go.

This was the best beef tartare I've had recently. There was zero of that typical raw-beef smell, and the seasoning wasn't overdone, so the flavor of the hanwoo itself came through cleanly. As shown in the photo, vegetables and sauce are layered on top, and overall it wasn't overly sweet or intense.

If you like beef tartare, you'll be genuinely satisfied. I tend to avoid tartare if it has even a hint of gamey smell or overly sweet sauce, but here I kept eating it. If you're looking for good beef tartare among Gwanghwamun restaurants, I'd recommend ordering this too.
And then the pollack sashimi salad. This was genuinely delicious.

The sauce was slightly sweet and spicy, the kind that really wakes up your appetite — we ended up refilling it once haha. Even as a side dish it didn't feel like an afterthought; even the banchan was delicious, and I loved that.

Overall, every Korean dish here was so good that even though I meant to eat moderately and leave, well... I failed haha. I kept eating the side dishes, refilled the hot pot vegetables, ate the tartare, ate the roseu pyeonchae, and left having eaten way too much. Yes, even for someone as picky as me about restaurants, this is a real find for sangyeonrye and company dinners near Gwanghwamun Station.
Final verdict on Wongiok Gwanghwamun
If you're looking for a place near Gwanghwamun for sangyeonrye or a meal with parents, I'd recommend Wongiok Gwanghwamun. The rooms are well set up for important family gatherings, and even the hall seating has generous spacing between tables, so it's comfortable to eat there.
Most of all, the food was delicious. I don't usually say every single dish was good in a restaurant review, but every dish we ordered that day was genuinely satisfying. The hanwoo beef tartare especially ranks among the best I've had recently, and the roseu pyeonchae with mustard vegetables, which I tried for the first time, hit my taste exactly. The stamina hot pot also had a clear, deep hanwoo broth loaded with meat and vegetables, which seemed great for eating with parents too.
I also loved that even the side dishes were delicious. So personally, this isn't a place I'd visit just once — it's somewhere I want to return to for important occasions like sangyeonrye or family meals. I especially recommend it to anyone looking for hanjeongsik near Gwanghwamun, a place to take their parents, or somewhere with quiet rooms.
I'm planning to come back for a date too haha. Next time I want to try the value set or the chef's choice course... Even by a picky food collector's standard, this one's going straight on my self-paid, revisit list of Gwanghwamun restaurants. I really ate so well. Haha.
