Smoked duck protein box takeout at a Gongdeok salad shop: Why Starve

In short

Why Starve Diet Gongdeok Main Branch is a salad and protein box shop on the basement floor of Lotte Castle President, connected to Exit 2 of Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul. The Smoked Duck Light Protein Box and the Chicken Oat Protein Box are 9,900 won each, and both went home as takeout with wasabi mayo and sriracha mayo on the side. Swapping the meat and the sauce made the two boxes taste noticeably different, so Why Starve Diet is a good pick for anyone who gets bored of plain salad fast.

I'm on a diet these days, so I've been a bit more careful about picking lunch or dinner menus. But eating only chicken breast or plain vegetable salad every time gets old fast.

Protein box takeout from Why Starve Diet Gongdeok Main Branch

So this time, while looking for a light meal in Gongdeok, I took out a protein box from Why Starve Diet Gongdeok Main Branch.

Of course you can eat in the shop too! The tables were neatly arranged and the place was clean.

There were also bar seats where solo diners could eat comfortably.

and there are so many sauces it's almost hard to choose! Pick based on your mood that day. The two menus I brought home to try were the Smoked Duck Light Protein Box and the Chicken Oat Protein Box. This could be a good reference for anyone looking for a menu with protein on top of just vegetables.

Smoked Duck Light Protein Box, 9,900 won, with wasabi mayo

The Smoked Duck Light Protein Box at Why Starve costs ₩9,900! For under ten thousand won, you get a generous serving of vegetables and protein.

The Smoked Duck Light Protein Box has smoked duck in it, so it suited days when I wanted something a bit more filling than a vegetable-only salad.

Being able to choose from a variety of sauces was also nice. I picked wasabi mayo since I thought it would go well with the smoked duck.

The smoky flavor of the duck combined with the sharp kick of wasabi worked better than I expected. Eaten with the vegetables, the smooth mayo sauce made it a salad I could keep eating without getting bored.

Chicken Oat Protein Box, 9,900 won, with oat rice and sriracha mayo

The Chicken Oat Protein Box at Why Starve Diet Gongdeok Main Branch is ₩9,900! For under ten thousand won you get protein from chicken plus healthy carbs from oat rice — plenty for a full meal.

The second one is the Chicken Oat Protein Box. With chicken instead of duck, it had a completely different feel.

Since it's the oat protein box, it came with oat rice! I was surprised it was almost 100% oats. Oat rice has a satisfying chew to it — this menu makes for a healthier, tastier, and more filling diet meal. It can be a bit disappointing when a meal has no rice, you know?

For this one I picked sriracha mayo. The spicy kick of sriracha paired well with the chicken, so I liked this combination too.

Which Why Starve Diet protein box was better?

Ordering both menus together, I found that even with the same protein box format, changing the meat and sauce makes the flavor quite different. If you're like me — haha, ugh — someone who gets tired of salad fast, it might be worth switching up the protein or the sauce. Since the flavor changes so much depending on the sauce, I really like that Why Starve Diet has so many sauce options.

Two protein boxes packed together for takeout

Being on a diet doesn't mean you should just eat as little as possible — how satisfied you feel after a meal matters too. When choosing a salad, I tend to prefer a menu with protein rather than just vegetables. Obviously you need protein, and vegetables alone leave you hungry fast. I chose these two protein boxes with that in mind.

A diet meal combining protein and vegetables

If you feel like plain salad on a diet will leave you hungry too soon, it might be worth checking out a menu with meat, like a protein box. Looking for good restaurants near Gongdeok Station, there's plenty of tasty food around, but finding something diet-friendly is a different challenge. If a full meal feels too heavy but vegetables alone feel lacking, the protein boxes at Why Starve Diet Gongdeok Main Branch are worth considering.
