Ikseon-dong bakery morning vs 4pm, rice cheese bread toasted: Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a takeout-only bakery in Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station toward Changdeokgung Palace. On a Saturday the writer stopped by twice, in the morning and at 4pm, and took home rice cheese bread, peanut bread and black sesame bread (3 breads for 13,500 won), finding clearly fewer breads left in the afternoon. The best bite of the day was Munhwa Bakery's cheese-studded rice cheese bread, warmed in a Balmuda toaster.

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), often called one of Seoul's top three bakeries, happened to be on the way to an appointment on Seosullat-gil, so I stopped by this Ikseon-dong favorite to pick up some bread for takeout. Since it's the go-to bakery for so many bread lovers, and everything's baked fresh that day, it was really fresh and delicious. It's known for garlic bread, onion bagels, and more, and it's takeout only.

Morning vs. 4pm: wait times and bread selection
I'd seen so many photos of long lines out front that I went feeling nervous, but when I arrived on a Saturday morning, there was no line at all. Then when I bragged to my friend Hongsuni about my bread haul, she said she wanted to buy some yanggaeng as a snack too, so I went back around 4pm — still no line that time, but there was noticeably less bread left. Visiting early in the morning gives you a much wider selection.

A date at the Ikseon-dong and Seosullat-gil restaurants, then takeout bread from Munhwa Bakery, made for a perfect course. Highly recommend!

Just a heads-up: the interior is small, so only 2 groups are let in at a time. That actually made it more comfortable to browse the bread and pay.
Munhwa Bakery's bread lineup
A wide range of breads

Looking around, a lot of people were buying garlic bread, coffee bread, and onion bagels, but injeolmi (sweet rice cake) bread, peanut bread, mugwort rice cake bread, and black sesame bread also caught my eye.

Oh, and salt bread had just come out of the oven too!

There were bagels and loaf breads good for breakfast, plus sweeter dessert breads for snacking.

I picked a rice cheese bread, and it turned out to be the tastiest thing I bought that day. Next time I want to try the rice chestnut bread.

How the bread was packed
Munhwa Bakery packaging review

They packed everything in a paper bag.
I ended up walking all around Seosullat-gil with it — free advertising, complete!
When I opened it at home, I found each piece individually wrapped in its own plastic bag.

The peanut bread and black sesame bread had cream inside, and since it was summer I worried they'd spoil, so I ate as much as I could right away and refrigerated the rest.

The cheese bread tasted even better after I toasted it in my Balmuda toaster >_<
3 breads for ₩13,500 — how the rice cheese bread tasted
An Ikseon-dong bakery recommendation

I bought cheese bread, black sesame bread, and peanut bread for a total of ₩13,500. Bread prices have gone up a lot lately, but Munhwa Bakery, one of Seoul's top three bakeries, still has a wide variety at reasonable prices.
The loaf itself was quite large.

Cutting into it, there was so much cheese packed inside.

It was incredibly soft inside, and the salty cheese flavor paired so well!

Since it's made with rice, it felt light enough to eat even in the morning, and it's the kind of bread even a young child would enjoy.

What about the peanut bread and black sesame bread?
Recommending Munhwa Bakery, one of Seoul's top three bakeries

This is the peanut bread. My friend Hongdori has been obsessed with peanut spreads and peanut jam lately, so I ended up buying this. Hehe.

The outside was covered in almonds, which were nutty on their own, and the almond-plus-peanut combo really was the best.

Inside, it was packed full of peanut cream, and it wasn't overly sweet — just the right balance, which made it really tasty.
It went really well with plain milk, and it would pair nicely with coffee in the morning too.

The black sesame bread has a cute round shape and was covered in a dusting of powder.

It was packed full of black sesame cream!

It had a slightly chewy, rice-cake-like texture that was really good.

That's my taste-test review of the three breads I was happy with: cheese bread, peanut bread, and black sesame bread. Hehe.
Overall thoughts on Munhwa Bakery
I recommend adding Munhwa Bakery, an Ikseon-dong favorite, to any Seoul bakery-hopping course. It's takeout only, but it's popular enough to draw lines, so I'd suggest visiting in the morning. You'll get to enjoy some delicious bread!
