Muirang Mulhoerang Hyoseong Direct Branch is a seafood restaurant in Hyoseong-dong, Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, serving assorted mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) alongside salt-grilled live prawns. A family order of two servings of assorted mulhoe and a small salt-grilled live prawn plate came with a free clam soup, which Muirang Mulhoerang topped up with added kalguksu noodles, and the prawns were grilled to an 8-minute stopwatch before the heads came back butter-grilled. Cold mulhoe and hot clam kalguksu on one table made for a filling family dinner.

Magok pork course dinner without alcohol, 58,000 won: Don Tamguso

Don Tamguso is a pork tasting-course restaurant 318 meters from Exit 3 of Magok Station in Gangseo, Seoul. Recovering from surgery, the writer skipped alcohol for mango and peach ade alongside the 58,000 won dinner course, which ran from chestnut and mushroom soup to shio koji grilled tenderloin, pork belly with minari, Wando abalone risotto and panna cotta. With an open kitchen and a roomy bar table made for quiet conversation, Don Tamguso earned a 100% return-visit verdict.

Mapo hot pot restaurant where the owner cooks tableside: Doonjeong

Doonjeong Hongdae Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant near Hongik University Station Exit 1 in Mapo, Seoul, serving hanwoo gomtang (clear beef soup) and hanwoo gopchang jeongol (beef tripe hot pot). On a weekday visit with her mother, the writer ordered the hanwoo gopchang jeongol with a bowl of rice and a cider, and the owner cooked the pot at the table, topping up the broth as it reduced. The tripe was chewy with no off smell and the broth tasted clear before a spicy kick came through at the end, making Doonjeong a good stop for either a full meal or drinks.
