Location and parking
Goshine Donghae Makguksu Jongno branch is on Insa-dong's cultural street near Anguk Station Exit 6, in the first alley beside Ssamzigil. Insa-dong is so narrow and crowded that there's no parking, sadly🥲

Goshine Donghae has been featured many times on famous TV shows like Saengsaengjeongbo Madang, Saengbangsong Oneul Jeonyeok and Gangwon-do Gajoda. As the name suggests, the original shop sits in front of Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, overlooking the sea, and is a famous buckwheat restaurant with house-made noodles, now run by the second generation. When I heard they'd opened a direct-run branch on Insa-dong's cultural street in Seoul, I rushed over with friends while we were in Insa-dong anyway😆

A hanok restaurant in Insa-dong for group meals and private dining?
Goshine Donghae Makguksu Jongno branch is in a hanok building that holds up to 100 people, with 3 private rooms inside seating 24, 12 and 10. Being a hanok, it really has that old-fashioned charm, and

there aren't many big restaurants in Insa-dong, so I assumed this would be small too, but surprise!

It holds up to 100 people, so it's roomy enough for company dinners and group get-togethers, and I think it'd be super for foreign tourist groups too?!

Inside there are 3 private rooms for 24, 12 and 10 people, so if you're looking for a restaurant in Insa-dong with private dining, I don't think you can beat this😚

Is it OK for family meals with kids and for dining solo?
Goshine Donghae Makguksu Jongno branch has baby chairs, so it suits family meals with kids, and with so many tables it's also a great place to eat alone in Insa-dong. Highly recommend👍🏻👍🏻

Menu and signature dishes
The signature dishes at Goshine Donghae Makguksu Jongno branch are buckwheat keto gimbap, buckwheat makguksu and kkamakjang suyuk (boiled pork). The buckwheat dishes, made with noodles pulled fresh to order, are the popular ones, and there's also suyuk, dolsot bibimbap (stone pot rice), jeongol (hotpot) and more, so you can pick whatever suits your taste😍

There's also a range of drinks that go well with the dishes, like highballs, dongdongju (rice wine), beer and soju, FYI✨
Side dishes and the self-serve bar
The basic sides at Goshine Donghae Makguksu Jongno branch are mussam (pickled radish wraps) and yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi). There's a self-serve bar in the middle of the restaurant where you can refill the sides as much as you like, and it also has sides that aren't served as standard, so definitely stop by the self-serve bar😏

What we ordered with friends and prices: ₩49,000 total
- Mul makguksu ₩10,000
- Yeolmu makguksu ₩12,000
- Perilla oil makguksu ₩12,000
- Spicy pork buckwheat gimbap ₩9,000
- Sikhye ₩4,000
- Cola ₩2,000
- Total ₩49,000

Even though the noodles are made in-house, today's dishes came out really quickly😆 Time to dig in fast! 🏃🏻➡️🏃🏻♀️➡️🏃🏻♂️➡️

How does the mul makguksu (₩10,000) taste?
This is the Goshine Donghae mul makguksu (₩10,000) that I ordered

The mul makguksu uses a long-simmered fish broth, so the flavor is deep and rich, and

overall it's tangy, sweet and refreshing, so it'd be seriously perfect when you've lost your appetite in the hot summer👍🏻👍🏻

Yeolmu makguksu (₩12,000)
Next is the yeolmu makguksu (₩12,000) my friend ordered. It has the coolness of the mul makguksu plus the tang of yeolmu kimchi, and

if you like the makguksu-plus-kimchi combo, order it without hesitation😘
Perilla oil makguksu (₩12,000)
This one, ordered by another friend, is the perilla oil makguksu (₩12,000)

It naturally made me think of "Na ya... deulgireum..." (the perilla oil joke). They say it uses 100% domestic organic perilla oil, cold-pressed, so the nutty aroma and flavor are totally on point😆
What does the spicy pork buckwheat gimbap (₩9,000) taste like?
I was so curious what gimbap made with buckwheat would taste like, so I ordered this spicy pork buckwheat gimbap (₩9,000)

Instead of rice, it uses buckwheat noodles aged in black vinegar, topped with fresh vegetables and spicy, fire-grilled-flavored stir-fried pork, and

unlike regular gimbap it isn't heavy, and the pork flavor is strong, so it's easy for anyone to enjoy without any burden?! If you're looking for diet keto gimbap, I totally recommend it🌟

The broth served with makguksu
When you order makguksu at Goshine Donghae, they bring you broth like this, and it's an open secret that it tastes even better with it🤫

Who should you bring to Goshine Donghae Makguksu Jongno branch?
Goshine Donghae, a second-generation buckwheat restaurant with house-made noodles, has plenty of dishes besides makguksu and lots of original creations like buckwheat gimbap, so I think it works well whoever you go with, young or old.
