Korean restaurant in Gasan: rice in gopchang hot pot broth, Yukhwang

Yukhwang (육향) is a Korean beef restaurant on the ground floor of Hanla One&One Tower Building A, near Gasan Digital Complex Station in Geumcheon, Seoul, serving hanwoo gomtang (beef bone soup), hot pots and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare). Well after rush hour, two diners at Yukhwang ordered a medium hanwoo gopchang (beef small intestine) hot pot for 51,000 won and a yukhoe mulhoe (cold raw beef soup) for 13,000 won. They stirred a bowl of rice into the rich broth to eat it like gopchang gukbap and finished with kalguksu noodles. Verdict: Yukhwang has easy parking and deep broth, making it a solid Gasan lunch or team-dinner spot, but the medium gopchang hot pot is a lot for two.

Siheung restaurant for chicken tender Caesar salad: Two Find Peter

Two Find Peter Eungye Branch is a pasta and Western restaurant on the 4th floor of the Goldway building in Eungye District, Siheung. On a return visit with her husband, her first since a Christmas date, the writer skipped her usual pasta for spicy crabby risotto (₩16,000), a Caesar salad with chicken tenders added (₩9,000 + ₩3,000), sous vide pork neck steak (₩20,000) and arancini (₩11,000), then watched the Eungye Lake fountain show after dinner. The crabby sauce at Two Find Peter was as good as ever, though to the writer's taste it works slightly better on pasta than on risotto.

Bucheon Korean BBQ grilling stew tofu in pork belly fat: Sundoli

Sundoli Sikdang Sosabon-dong is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving domestic Handon frozen pork belly (naengsam), at the intersection by the Hansin Market entrance near Sosa Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. A couple ordered the Sun-i Set (3 servings of Handon frozen pork belly with spicy marinated crab and doenjang stew included), added 2 more servings, grilled the doenjang stew tofu in the pork belly fat and finished with cold noodles in a brisket-and-chicken broth. With nutty, odor-free pork belly and doenjang stew that tastes like an old-school BBQ house, Sundoli Sikdang is a neighborhood spot the writer has vowed to revisit.

Bucheon Station monkfish restaurant, big chunks & chewy skin: Haemul

Haemul Teukbyeolsi Bucheon Station branch (해물특별시 부천역본점) is a seafood restaurant near Bucheon Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, that serves agujjim (spicy braised monkfish) on a hot stone plate. After giving up on monkfish for a while because of disappointing delivery orders, the writer and her husband ordered the small stone-plate monkfish stew (₩43,000) in the regular version with skin at Shin Ramyun spice level, then finished with cheese fried rice (₩4,500 extra). With big chunks of monkfish, well-balanced seasoning and a portion generous enough for 3, Haemul Teukbyeolsi suits anyone who wants meaty monkfish and chewy skin.

Mapo Station Korean BBQ for in-laws: two-rib galbitang at Usijang

Usijang Hoegwan is a Korean beef restaurant in an alley near Exit 3 of Mapo Station in Seoul, serving beef BBQ, gukbap (rice soup), suyuk (boiled sliced meat) and yuksashimi (thin raw beef slices). Treating her parents-in-law, the writer ordered the 116,900 won assorted 3-person set plus one extra meal and a half plate of suyuk, sharing yuksashimi, charcoal-grilled beef, LA galbi and galbitang (beef short rib soup). The beef was good, but the rich broth of the Usijang Hoegwan galbitang, with two big ribs, was the most memorable part.

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch (벽돌생갈비 종로점) is a galbi (Korean grilled ribs) restaurant in Jongno, Jung-gu, Daegu, near Jungangno Station, where staff grill the meat from start to finish. On a visit to treat an older sister, the order was half-and-half marinated and fresh galbi, fresh bakpo galbi (thinly sliced ribs) and naengmyeon (cold noodles), and even side dishes like perilla pesto and pickled celery were delicious. With lightly seasoned meat and wide tables, Jangjak Saenggalbi is an easy, comfortable place to treat someone to dinner.

Siheung LA galbi restaurant with free weekday naengmyeon: Gyesu Garden

Gyesu Garden (계수가든) is a pork galbi and LA galbi restaurant on Beoman-ro in Siheung, Gyeonggi, right next to Starfield Bucheon. On a return visit around 8 pm on a weekday, the writer ordered the Signature Set (2 servings of pork galbi plus 1 serving of LA galbi), added 2 more servings of LA galbi, and also enjoyed the naengmyeon (cold noodles) that comes free with any meat order on weekdays, 1 per person, plus a free dessert drink. Thanks to the seasoning and the free weekday meal, Gyesu Garden is the writer's go-to spot, always on a weekday.

Korean BBQ in Sinjungdong: potato wraps & free doenjang stew, Cham

Cham Dwaejitgan Bucheon Sinjungdong Branch (참돼짓간 부천신중동점) is a 24-hour Korean BBQ restaurant near Sinjungdong Station in Bucheon, where staff grill the pork over smouldering rice husks beneath the grill plate. On a rainy evening the writer ordered 1 serving each of pork neck, pork belly and pork jowl, plus the signature potato wraps and naengmyeon-shop-style mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup), and received a free doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) for reacting so well. The woodfire-like smoky aroma and cheerful staff grilling made Cham Dwaejitgan a very satisfying meal.

Gongdeok, Seoul Korean beef dinner for a pre-wedding anniversary: Usu

Usu (우수) is a private-room Korean beef course restaurant on the second basement floor of the Lotte Castle President shopping arcade, right in front of Exit 2 of Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul. The writer, who had held her families' first meeting at Usu, returned with her fiancé for a pre-wedding anniversary and ordered the Dinner B course: anniversary sparkling wine (juice for her fiancé, who doesn't drink), then ugyejinjuk porridge, tilefish in neungi mushroom broth, abalone five-color gardenia noodles, grilled hanwoo and Korean melon sorbet, and every course was satisfying. With quiet private rooms and 3 hours of parking support, Usu suits an anniversary dinner or a meeting between both families.

Siheung duck BBQ with whole garlic and buckwheat noodles: Grill Duck

Grill Duck Hangari Barbecue (그릴덕 항아리바베큐) is a charcoal-grilled duck restaurant near Starfield Bucheon, at 282 Beoman-ro in Siheung, Gyeonggi. On a return visit for a Jungbok (midsummer 'dog day') dinner after shopping at Starfield, the writer ordered the half-and-half duck (400g plain duck + 400g jumulleok, marinated duck) and mul-memil guksu (buckwheat noodles in broth) topped with duck slices, and was impressed by the deep charcoal flavor of the plain duck, the not-too-salty jumulleok and the clear perilla duck soup. Grill Duck Hangari Barbecue is a good fit for family gatherings that want plain and marinated duck at the same table.

Siheung Baegot eel buffet with eel grilled standing up: Songnim Bok

Songnim Bok Jangeo (송림복장어) Siheung Baegot Direct Branch is an all-you-can-eat eel restaurant near Baegot Saengmyeong Park in Siheung, Gyeonggi, serving unlimited domestic Japonica freshwater eel with pork belly and chicken neck. On a packed evening, the blogger waited for a table, grilled the eel standing upright in the vertical grooves of a charcoal grill and kept refilling eel cut into thirds and meat from the self-serve bar. The blogger came for the eel, but the chicken neck and pork belly at Songnim Bok Jangeo were just as tasty with no gamey smell, making it a truly restorative meal.
