Rainy-day pork bone soup in Ingye-dong, Suwon: heaps of scallions

Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch is a 24-hour pork bone soup (ppyeo haejangguk) restaurant behind Nahyeseok Street in Ingye-dong, Suwon. On a cold, rainy day the writer had a special pork bone soup and a regular pork bone soup at the default spice level. The slow-boiled meat came off the bone easily and was moist, with no gamey smell. After hearing the next table call the spicy (eolkeun) version the real deal, the writer plans to order it next time. Eolkeunhan Ppyeo Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch is a good Ingye-dong soup spot for a filling meal at any hour.

Sungsimdang-style cake café in Suwon: fresh fruit cream cake at Diaz

Diaz Cake Boutique (디아즈케이크부띠끄) is a cake and tea café on the 2nd floor of a building on Nahyeseok Street in Ingye-dong, Suwon, near City Hall Station. At Diaz Cake Boutique the writer had the fruit fresh cream cake topped with seasonal fruit, an iced Americano and an iced peach oolong tea, and also looked over the blueberry whole cake on display and the seating. Thanks to its dairy cream and fresh fruit cakes, the writer says Diaz Cake Boutique deserves to be called the Sungsimdang of Suwon.

Suwon Station dessert café: Valrhona cake big enough for two, Tteum

Tteum Café by Oneplay Suwon Station (띰 카페 바이 원플레이 수원역점) is a specialty coffee and handmade dessert café on Sehwa-ro 154beon-gil in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. The writer had a Milano Blend iced Americano and an XL handmade Valrhona chocolate cake for around 9,000 won, and also checked out the bean-sniffing corner and the in-building parking. If you want full-bodied coffee and a cake slice big enough for two to share, Tteum Café Suwon Station is a good fit.

Jije Station Korean restaurant: ginseng nurungji-tang, room for 18

Hwanggeum Seafood Nurungji-tang (황금해물누룽지탕) is a Korean restaurant specializing in seafood nurungji-tang (scorched rice soup) on the Manse-ro restaurant street in Bijeon-dong, Pyeongtaek. The writer had cultured wild ginseng root nurungji-tang boiling in a stone pot heated to 300°C and Jirisan black pork glutinous rice tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and finished every bit of the scorched rice despite being on a diet. With mild, nourishing flavors, a private room for up to 18 and a large parking lot, Hwanggeum Seafood Nurungji-tang is a recommended choice for family gatherings with parents or year-end get-togethers.

Pyeongtaek café lunch happy hour: banana chocolate bread at Hoppydopi

Hoppydopi (호피도피) is a handmade dessert café in Tongbok-dong, Pyeongtaek, next to the Tongbok community center and within walking distance of Tongbok Market. During Hoppydopi's lunchtime happy hour with ₩1,000 off, the writer had the signature Hoppydopi latte, banana chocolate bread and a pain suisse, and the not-too-sweet desserts suited the autumn sky through the big windows. Suwon mackerel restaurant, mulhoe with abalone & octopus: Godeungeo

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch (고등어명품이되다 수원점) is a Korean restaurant on Seobu-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, specialising in mackerel sashimi, grilled fish and braised fish, with live mackerel kept in an in-house tank for its mackerel sashimi and mackerel mulhoe (cold raw fish soup). On a weekday visit at 11 a.m., the mackerel mulhoe came with abalone, octopus and raw fish in an icy, not-too-salty broth, with springy mackerel and a jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) side dish good enough to tempt an extra bowl of rice. For live mackerel sashimi in Suwon without the trip to the East Sea, Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is the answer.

Gwanggyo Café Street pizza: 4 big slices & free parking, The European

The European Gwanggyo is a wood-fired pizza and pasta restaurant on Gwanggyo Café Street in Suwon, Gyeonggi. For lunch the writer had The European's truffle funghi pizza, topped with a poached egg, and a hot americano. The dough was chewy and fluffy with a good mushroom and truffle aroma, and the pizza comes as 4 big slices, so two people should order at least two dishes. The European Gwanggyo is close to Café Street Public Parking Lot 2 and offers baby chairs, a group room and Catch Table reservations, making it a good pick for anything from a solo lunch to a company dinner.

Weekend gyukatsu lunch in Bongdam: brazier-grilled 140g, Sindong Lab

Weekend lunch bookings fill up and a wait forms, so booking on Naver before visiting Sindong Lab Hwaseong Bongdam Branch is the smart move.

Café Meomureum (카페 머무름) is a bakery café that makes its own breads and desserts, on the 2nd floor of the Dongsin shopping complex in Jeongja-dong, Jangan-gu, Suwon, near Manseok Park. The writer visited with a friend, drank a not-too-sweet Geomundo mugwort latte with a strong mugwort aroma, and waited for a cinnamon roll fresh out of the oven. With good bread and drinks, a roomy, quiet interior and a study area, Café Meomureum is a north Suwon café made for lingering.

Suwon bakery café: matcha terrine, city-view window bar, Cork Bake Bar

Cork Bake Bar is a spacious bakery café selling its own freshly baked bread, located near Beopwon intersection (법원사거리) in Maetan-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon. After stopping by their mom's place, the writer dropped into Cork Bake Bar for a non-acidic americano with a chocolate baguette and a matcha terrine, and liked the city view from the window bar seats, the hygienic dome-covered bread displays, the self-serve oven and the large open parking lot. If you want somewhere for bread and tea after a meal near Beopwon intersection without worrying about parking, Cork Bake Bar is a good fit.
