Bukchon 90-minute perfume one-day class in Seoul: Muhwawon

In short

Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop is a perfume one-day class studio on the third floor at 23 Yulgok-ro 6-gil in Jongno, Seoul, near Changdeokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village. When a friend's business trip to Seoul lined up with a day off, the writer booked the roughly 90-minute class, learned the basics of blending from printed materials and a video, then smelled the fragrances and adjusted the ratios until each of them had a personal scent. Having tried two or three perfume workshops before, the writer found Muhwawon's teaching the most systematic of them all.

These days a date of eating something delicious and going to a café is nice, but I feel like time spent making something together sticks in your memory longer. A friend of mine happened to be on a business trip in Seoul, and our days off lined up, so we squeezed in a date after a while. We both love hands-on workshop experiences, and this time we chose Muhwawon Perfume Workshop near Bukchon. I've tried two or three perfume workshops before, but this time I finished the experience thinking, "this one is definitely different" — I was that satisfied.

What you learn before choosing a scent at Muhwawon

What I liked most about Muhwawon was that it wasn't simply a "pick a scent you like and mix it" kind of place. Using prepared materials and video, we first learned the basics of fragrance and perfumery. The explanations for the experience were laid out quite systematically, which gave me a more professional impression than the perfume workshops I'd visited before.

Even someone like me who's made perfume a few times learned new things, and I think a first-time visitor would feel even more confident starting to blend.

Finding your own scent among about 48 fragrances

In the main part of the experience, you test a variety of prepared fragrances one by one to find the scent you like. What was especially interesting about Muhwawon was that beyond the usual floral, citrus, and woody families, you can encounter scents inspired by Korean materials — hanji (traditional mulberry paper), traditional medicinal herbs, temple incense, and Korean cedar.

Once you've chosen the scents you like, you can test different combinations and ratios repeatedly to find the right balance. It was really fun to see how even the same fragrances feel completely different with a small change in ratio. So the finished perfume felt less like a simple souvenir and more like a scent truly made to my own taste.

Is the Muhwawon studio private enough for two?

When choosing a perfume workshop in Seoul, the space matters to me just as much as the content of the experience. Muhwawon had a quiet, private atmosphere that made it easy to chat with my friend and focus on the class. The space itself was calm and upscale, fitting well for a special occasion too. Being able to take our time smelling fragrances and talking about our preferences, rather than in a crowded workshop full of people, was another thing I really appreciated.

A different kind of date course in Bukchon, Seoul

Around Unni-dong in Jongno where Muhwawon is located, there's plenty to explore together — Changdeokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Ikseon-dong, Insa-dong, and Seosunra-gil. So if you're looking for a Bukchon date course recommendation, building a half-day itinerary centered around perfume-making, along with a meal, a café stop, and a walk, sounds like a great idea.

Especially if you're with a friend visiting Seoul, experiencing Korean-inspired scents and taking home a perfume you made yourself would make for an even more special memory.

I've tried perfume workshops before, but this time Muhwawon's systematic explanations and professional blending process were the most satisfying yet. Instead of just grabbing a meal with a friend I hadn't seen in a while and parting ways, we got to learn more about each other's tastes and each finish our own scent, making it a far more memorable time.

If you're looking for a perfume workshop in Seoul for a Bukchon date course recommendation, give Muhwawon a try. I'd especially recommend it to anyone who loves perfume or enjoys hands-on experience dates.
