I visited Omil Hongdae, a casual restaurant near Hongik Univ. Station known for its Rubber Duck Omurice. Hongdae is one of Seoul's hottest date spots, so here's my honest take on how Omil Hongdae was.

Omil Hongdae is on the 2nd floor at 178-8 Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul (lot-number address: 166-3 Donggyo-dong), a 1-minute walk from Exit 4 of Hongik Univ. Station. According to the store info, it is open daily 11:00–21:15, with last order at 20:30.

It has a neat exterior, and the inside felt atmospheric. It's close to AK Plaza and near CGV Yeonnam. One note: the writer's original post says the restaurant opens at 11:30 a.m. daily and closes at 9:15 p.m., so keep that in mind.

Atmosphere and waiting at Omil Hongdae

Omil Hongdae catches the eye from the outside, and the inside has a modern interior with an atmospheric feel. There may be a wait at peak times, so for group meals I'd recommend asking about a reservation first.

It's a clean place with an atmosphere different from other restaurants. I caught myself thinking, "Was there such a nice place near Hongdae?" The stylish feel was totally my taste.

After talking it over with my younger sibling, I picked the Rubber Duck Omurice first. It's the signature dish, so I really wanted to try it, and you can get a cute rubber duck goodie too. My sibling chose the Flat Iron Spicy Risotto, and we ordered both ades. Water, pickles and disposable aprons are at the self-serve bar, free to use.

How do the Oh! Pineapple Ade and Oh! Basil & Tomato Ade taste?

The Oh! Pineapple Ade arrived looking like a place SpongeBob might live, and stirred well it gave rich pineapple flavor with refreshing fizz. The Oh! Basil & Tomato Ade was an ade unlike anything I'd ever had.

Everything is cooked to order, so there's a tasty wait, and the two ades hit the table before the mains. The Basil & Tomato Ade packs tomato freshness and basil aroma into one glass, giving a unique taste.

Rubber Duck Omurice, with salmon fried rice inside

Omil Hongdae's Rubber Duck Omurice hides salmon fried rice inside, and with the sauce it was heavenly. The generous, appetizing plate was topped with a little cluster of duck-shaped quail eggs, which left an impression.

The soft omelet texture and the savory sauce went well together. It felt like a lesson in what a luxurious omurice is. The omelet melted in my mouth, and the fried rice inside was fluffy and had a great texture. If you visit Omil Hongdae, do try the Rubber Duck Omurice.

How spicy is the Flat Iron Spicy Risotto?

Omil Hongdae's Flat Iron Spicy Risotto has vegetables stir-fried in chili oil for a spicy aroma, topped with flat iron steak, tomato and cheese. Its charm is the opposite of the Rubber Duck Omurice, so the two made a great pairing.

The plating was a feast for the eyes. Eating the soft, spicy risotto with the cheese katsu on top was heavenly. Whether ade, omurice or risotto, the quality was high and I was satisfied.

Overall verdict on Omil Hongdae

Omil Hongdae is a restaurant I'd give a pass in atmosphere, service and food. Above all the food quality was truly excellent, so whenever I'm at Hongik Univ. Station I'm 200% coming back.

I liked the atmospheric space, and the staff were kind, so the meal was a pleasure. You can really feel how much they care about letting guests eat comfortably. I'd recommend it for lunch, a family outing or a date with your partner.
