Backstreet Pizza entrance down the alley off Jongno Pocha Street

Backstreet Pizza is a 2-minute walk from Exit 5 of Jongno 3-ga Station. Head into the alley past Jinnakji-golmok on Jongno Pocha Street. It's quicker to look for the red door than a sign — there's a big pizza photo on it, so it's easy to spot.

The basement stairs are narrow and steep

Open the red door at Backstreet Pizza and you're right at the stairs. They're narrow and steep, with a mind-your-head sign posted. Taller people really need to be careful. If you're in heels, hold the railing on the way down.

What's the atmosphere like inside Backstreet Pizza?

Vintage basement interior of Backstreet Pizza

The vibe completely changes once you go down the stairs at Backstreet Pizza. Black walls, gold frames, mirrors, and chandelier lighting give it the feel of a vintage bar.

Even underground, the ceilings are high, so it doesn't feel cramped at all.

2-seat and 4-seat tables in the high-ceilinged basement

Tables are a mix of 2-seaters and 4-seaters, and the lighting makes for a good atmosphere — photos come out great. Backstreet Pizza would work well as a Jongno date spot.

Self-bar with water, parmesan cheese powder, and hot sauce

Self-bar and phone charging

The self-bar at Backstreet Pizza has water, parmesan cheese powder, and hot sauce that you can help yourself to. Dipping sauce and pickles are served separately.

Phone charging spot next to the self-bar

You can also charge your phone next to the self-bar, which seemed handy for when your battery's dying!!

How were the four flavors on the Quater Street pizza?

Backstreet Pizza's Quater Street pizza brings all four signature flavors onto a single pie.

  • 🍟 Potato Killer
  • 🦐 Shrimp Gangster
  • 🍔 Cheese & Patty Bomb
  • 🍕 Pepperoni Shotgun
Potato Killer slice topped with fries

Potato Killer: a sweet-and-salty slice topped with fries

The slice topped with fries is Potato Killer, with seasoned fries, bacon, and honey on top. This is also the one I reached for first. Fries as a pizza topping — genius.

Potato Killer pizza with bacon and honey

The fries were sweetly seasoned, and with the bacon and honey it was total sweet-and-salty. The combo of honey and seasoning was addictive!!

Shrimp Gangster slice topped with butter shrimp

Shrimp Gangster: plump butter shrimp

The shrimp option, Shrimp Gangster, is topped with butter shrimp — the shrimp were plump and tender with a nice bite. You could taste the butter too, so if you like shrimp this one delivers.

Cheese & Patty Bomb slice with beef patty and cheddar cheese

Cheese & Patty Bomb: hearty like a burger

Cheese & Patty Bomb has a beef patty with cheddar cheese, onion, and tomato on top, so it felt like eating a burger. Of the four, it was the most filling.

Pepperoni Shotgun slice with double the pepperoni

Pepperoni Shotgun: double the pepperoni

Pepperoni Shotgun has thick-cut pepperoni piled on at double the usual amount, so the salty punch was unmistakable. It's the perfect match for beer, so I'd recommend it as a Jongno pizza-and-beer spot.

Pizza slice with cheese stretching on a thin crust

The crust, cheese, dipping sauce, and portion size

The Quater Street crust is on the thin side, so it's not heavy, but the cheese isn't skimped on — pick up a slice and it stretches like this. The dipping sauce that comes with it is rich and sweet, so I kept dipping the crust in it. One pie seems just right for two people.

Who would I recommend Backstreet Pizza to?

Final photo of the Quater Street pizza eaten at Backstreet Pizza

Backstreet Pizza is a Jongno pizza spot that's great for filling up before drinking on the pocha street in Jongno 3-ga. It has enough atmosphere to work as a Jongno date spot too, or for pizza and beer as a second round after dinner.

I'll be back next time I'm in Jongno 3-ga. Next time I want to try the Mushroom Bang! too. If you like pizza, definitely check it out ~~
