Mullae bar: summer draft beer & mild seafood yakisoba at Akai Teppan

In short

Akai Teppan (아카이테판) is a teppanyaki bar on Dorim-ro 125-gil near Mullae Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. On a hot summer day the writer ordered 2 Suntory draft beers and the regular (not spicy) seafood yakisoba, and the crisp draft beer paired well with the sweet-and-salty sauce, the runny fried egg and the plump shrimp. Akai Teppan is worth a return visit for a date or a second round of draft beer and teppan bar food near Mullae Station.

Yakisoba and draft beer at Akai Teppan near Mullae Station

Today I'm introducing Akai Teppan (아카이테판), a bar near Mullae Station that's great with beer. It's perfect for draft beer on a hot summer day. Besides the yakisoba I had, there's okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake), shio soba, teppan grills, grilled pork jowl and lots more tasty iron-griddle dishes. The space is roomy and the owners are friendly, so I'd happily go back.

Akai Teppan is open Mon–Thu 17:00–24:00 (last order 23:00), Fri 17:00–01:00 (last order 00:00), Sat 15:00–01:00 (last order 00:00) and Sun 15:00–24:00 (last order 23:00). Groups of up to 8 and reservations are possible, there's Wi-Fi, and paid parking is available.

The place carries the tagline "a little Hiroshima you can feel in Mullae." If you're looking for a moody Japanese-style pub for a date near Mullae Station or the Mullae Arts Village, Akai Teppan is the one! The food has a Japanese feel, but it's said to be adapted to Korean tastes.

There's a menu outside too, so you can scan it before going in. So many good things on it that I thought, let's just go in and decide inside~

Is Akai Teppan's atmosphere good for a date?

Inside, the lighting is pleasantly dim, and the place is clean and comfortable. It's spacious with plenty of seats. The interior is stylish and doesn't feel like a typical Japanese pub, so I thought it was a great Mullae spot for a date.

Each table also has a menu, so you can browse comfortably. (There's a kiosk too, but personally I like places with a real menu like this better, you know?!)

Akai Teppan's Suntory draft beer in summer

It was so hot that I ordered 2 draft beers right away. After some deliberating, I picked the seafood yakisoba! It comes in regular and spicy, and if you like heat, the spicy one is probably great. Akai Teppan seems to be famous for its spicy griddle dishes. If only I could handle spice...

The Suntory draft beer came first, and seriously, why is it this good...? Crisp, fragrant and cold, it's just perfect for summer. You can feel the freshness even in the video . . . ♥

Bar recommendation near Mullae Station

Before the yakisoba arrived, we cheered and gulped it down, and it was so delicious! I like beers that go down easy, so it was totally my taste. I'll probably be hunting down Suntory draft beer from now on, haha

Table with seafood yakisoba at Akai Teppan

How is Akai Teppan's regular seafood yakisoba?

Before long, the main dish, seafood yakisoba, arrived. Chewy noodles, seafood, crunchy vegetables and a fried egg make a perfect combination.

The runny yolk is so perfect too?? The sauce isn't spicy but sweet, salty and punchy, so it's ideal with beer. And the shrimp are so plump!!

Seafood yakisoba topped with a fried egg and bonito flakes

The yakisoba came out piping hot, and the bonito flakes (gatsuobushi) kept wilting on top, yet it didn't cool quickly and I could enjoy it to the end. I hate food going cold, so maybe the bowl is one that keeps the heat in..?

Bean sprouts plus noodles, how could I resist,,,! One slurp of noodles, one sip of beer, and it's pure heaven.

It's even tastier eaten with the egg.

Akai Teppan tips: weekend reservations and second rounds

Akai Teppan is quite a hot spot on weekends, so there may be a wait, and booking ahead seems like a good idea. There are lots of easy, light dishes too, so it'd also be a good place for a second round.

And I'll say it once more... please, please try the Suntory draft beer at Akai Teppan. I'd like to go back, and next time I want to enjoy draft beer with tempura or okonomiyaki!!
