Gangnam Station eel restaurant for date night: Jangsimdo Gangnam
In short
Jangsimdo Gangnam is a grilled eel restaurant on basement level 2 of 363 Gangnam-daero in Seocho, Seoul, right outside Gangnam Station Exit 5. The writer and a companion ordered the Seonsang charcoal-grilled Two-Plus (1++) eel for two (98,000 won), Mubyeongjangsu-tang eel soup, bibim guksu and Jangsimdo Hongyeon sangria. Staff grilled the eel to the end on a downdraft roaster, so there was no smoke to worry about. Every summer my friend Kkamjjik-i and I used to go to a regular eel place, but I moved, so this year summer ended without our trip. So sad... and then, right on cue, I got a good chance to visit Jangsimdo Gangnam (장심도 강남점)!
It was my first proper upscale restaurant atmosphere in a while with Kkamjjik-i, haha. As the biggest grilled eel restaurant in Gangnam, it's perfect for group dinners, family gatherings and dates.
Where is Jangsimdo Gangnam and is there parking?
Jangsimdo Gangnam is on B2 of 363 Gangnam-daero, Seocho-gu, Seoul, and is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00. It's less than 30 seconds on foot from Gangnam Station Exit 5, so you don't even need to look for directions. The access is top-notch.

Head to the separate entrance at the back of the building and a grand signboard and a classy exterior welcome you.

There's a private parking lot to the right of the entrance, and the staff kindly help with valet parking, so it's easy to come by car.
Jangsimdo Gangnam interior and private rooms
The interior is styled like a pavilion (jeongja), a modern take on the boating parties of the Joseon dynasty. It feels quite upscale, like a boat floating on water. Right at the entrance, a red-clay pre-grilling room catches your eye.

There are 10 rooms in total, ranging from a 20-person group dinner room to a 12-person Cheongmo room (for wedding-invitation gatherings), an 8-person small room, and private rooms for 2 to 6 people.
It's a great fit for business meetings, family meals, or anyone looking for a group dinner spot in Gangnam 👀 They even have baby chairs, so a family meal with kids is totally fine!!
Jangsimdo Gangnam side dishes and what we ordered
The two of us ordered the charcoal eel set for two, mubyeongjangsu-tang (restorative eel soup), bibim guksu (spicy-sweet noodles) and two glasses of Hongyeon sangria. Once we ordered, a neat table setting arrived.

Our order
- Charcoal eel (two-beef-grade eel++) for 2 (₩98,000)
- Mubyeongjangsu-tang (₩13,000)
- Bibim guksu (₩8,000)
- Jangsimdo Hongyeon sangria (₩12,000 each)
Once you order, the table fills up: ginger, pickled perilla leaves, chives, breadcrumbs, corn salad and cultured wild ginseng roots (all refillable).

There's also organic wrap lettuce, said to cost three times as much as ordinary top-grade ssam greens, with a tender, fresh texture. Maldon salt, myeongi (wild garlic chive) wasabi and garlic sauce come along too.

Health-minded cultured wild ginseng roots and homemade bokbunja (Korean black raspberry) sauce make it a generous lineup.

Especially the breadcrumbs and garlic mayo sauce: dab a golden-grilled piece of eel in the garlic mayo, coat it in breadcrumbs, and you bite through a crisp coating into rich, nutty eel meat. It feels like eating a luxury eel katsu.
How is the Two-Plus (1++) eel grilled at Jangsimdo?

The charcoal eel++ comes on an antique-style cutting board with the name Jangsimdo written in Chinese characters, and it's visually overwhelming from the start.
As soon as you order, the eel is first grilled in the red-clay room over binchotan charcoal and apple-wood logs at 800 degrees, cooked 80% through so the fine bones melt away, and then served to the table. The remaining 20% is cooked at your seat!

The pyramid-shaped roaster at each table is meant to wish for eternal youth and long life..!! haha (every little thing has a meaning, so cool)

The sweet, soft heart of the scallions grilled alongside went really well with the eel too.
Why Jangsimdo Gangnam works for a date: no smoke or smell
Jangsimdo Gangnam uses a downdraft roaster, so no smoke rises, and the staff grill everything for you, so it was easy to focus on our conversation. Compared with my old regular place before I moved, where smoke made clothes smell and we had to grill it ourselves, it was a big difference.
The Japonica eel, crisp outside and moist inside, melts softly in the mouth, and the richness typical of eel is cut right through by the homemade bokbunja sauce and ginger!

The staff's recommended way to eat grilled eel
- First bite: Maldon salt
- Second: garlic sauce + breadcrumbs
- Third: perilla leaf + bokbunja sauce + chives + ginger
Eating in the recommended order, I enjoyed it to the fullest..!
How are the bibim guksu, Hongyeon sangria and Mubyeongjangsu-tang?
The bibim guksu (₩8,000) came out when we were about halfway through the eel, and the sweet-and-sour noodles left my mouth feeling totally refreshed.

The Jangsimdo Hongyeon sangria (₩12,000 each) is their signature drink, said to be made with red wine, bokbunja and aged fruit,

and it was sweet yet clean, a wonderful match for the grilled eel.
The mubyeongjangsu-tang (₩13,000) we had to finish the meal is said to be simmered for over 12 hours with Japonica eel, fruit and vegetables, and the broth was deep and rich.
Jangsimdo Gangnam Q&A before you go

There are 10 separate rooms in all, from a 20-person group room and a 12-person Cheongmo room to private rooms for 8, 6, 4 and 2!

I recommend the signature 'Jangsimdo Hongyeon sangria' made with bokbunja and red wine, the 12-hour 'mubyeongjangsu-tang', and the tangy bibim guksu!
