Hapjeong Korean BBQ set with myeongi and a nurungji finish: Jeongyukdo

In short

Jeongyukdo (정육도) is a Korean BBQ restaurant on the 2nd floor on Yanghwa-ro 6-gil in Mapo, Seoul, near Hapjeong Station and Hongdae. It grills 1++ grade hanwoo beef and domestic grade-1 pork over hardwood charcoal. The writer ordered the Jeongyukdo meat set, alternating bites with wasabi, wholegrain mustard and myeongi namul (pickled wild garlic leaves). The set came with doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), and steamed egg and nurungji (scorched rice) were added. With wide table spacing, kids' chairs and separate men's and women's restrooms, Jeongyukdo works well for both a work dinner and a family meal.

Looking for a Hapjeong Station restaurant or a Hongdae BBQ spot lately? Especially somewhere to try premium hanwoo (Korean beef) and hanwoo pork — I found a hot new place near Hapjeong that fits the bill! I went to Jeongyukdo :)

The storefront

Jeongyukdo's outer wall with hanwoo pork and hanwoo beef phrases

On the outside wall were phrases showing real pride in their hanwoo and hanwoo pork. It got me even more excited haha. Little details like these seem to show how much care Jeongyukdo puts in.

Large billboard with Jeongyukdo's philosophy written on it

A huge billboard had Jeongyukdo's philosophy written on it. The phrase "an honest, proper meat restaurant" gave me a sense of trust haha. It's big enough to stop you in your tracks even just walking by.

Inside Jeongyukdo: good for a group dinner or family outing?

The interior overall felt clean and well-organized. I liked that the tables were spaced generously apart.

It's cozy enough for a quiet meal but also works for groups, making it a solid pick for a Hongdae BBQ or Yeonnam-dong get-together. Separate men's and women's restrooms inside made it even more convenient. With a kids' chair on hand too, I thought it'd be a perfect spot for a family outing haha.

Looking at the menu, I saw they use 1++ grade hanwoo and domestic grade-1 pork. I was impressed that they emphasize the quality of the meat itself. And finishing it over charcoal — that sounded promising!

There were all kinds of meat menus, from hanwoo sets to pork sets. Extra dishes like doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), kimchi fried rice, and water-based bibim naengmyeon (cold noodles) were also available as sides, which I liked. They even have a separate lunch menu, so it'd be good for lunch too.

They were also running an event where you get a free highball for saving them on Naver Place, and a free side dish for leaving a review. I should leave a review later and grab that service too haha. Events like these make it feel even better value.

Neat basic side dishes

Jeongyukdo basic side dish setting

The basic side dishes on the table were really neat and clean. Sliced onions, seasoned scallion salad, and a variety of sauces! There was plenty to go with the meat, which I loved haha. That scallion salad especially is a combination I really love.

Sauces and vegetable side dishes to pair with the meat

These sauces and side dishes were there to bring out the meat's flavor even more. This vegetable side dish in particular was a fantastic match with the meat. Even just the basic sides had me already excited!

Jeongyukdo meat set — myeoljeot is the perfect pairing

Ta-da~ our ordered Jeongyukdo meat set finally arrives! The texture of the meat is unbelievably glossy.

Thick-cut meat cooking on the grill

The thick cuts cooking beautifully on the grill. The charcoal aroma seeped into the meat, adding even more flavor, it seemed.

Meat grilling over the charcoal grill

Writing this now, I'm still remembering the savory meat smell from that day ㅠㅠ It really got the saliva going.

Meat grilled golden brown with juices visible

The meat was placed on the charcoal grill and cooked to a golden brown. You could literally see the juices bubbling up.

My friend did the grilling, and their grilling skills were seriously top-notch haha.

Grilled meat dipped in wholegrain mustard
Meat wrapped in myeoljeot (ramp-leaf pickle)

I tried a well-grilled piece of meat several different ways. It was clean and light with wasabi, and really delicious with wholegrain mustard too. But my personal favorite combo was definitely myeoljeot (ramp-leaf pickle).

Side dishes — doenjang stew, steamed egg, nurungji

Doenjang stew included with the meat set

Ordering the Jeongyukdo meat set came with a doenjang stew included as standard. You all know that doenjang stew at a Korean BBQ place is basically an art form, right? This one was a spicy, well-executed classic.

Fluffy steamed egg dish

I also ordered the fluffy steamed egg. It was seasoned just right and soft, so I think kids would love it too.

Paired with the spicy meat dishes, it was a fantastic match. The flavor wrapped smoothly around the mouth.

Nurungji ordered to finish the meal
A bowl of nurungji with rice mixed in

To finish, I ordered the cool nurungji (scorched rice soup). It was great for refreshing the palate after all that meat. Mixing rice into it for a hearty finish made me feel completely satisfied. Koreans really are the people of guk-bap (soup with rice) haha.
