Seolleung Station eel restaurant for team dinners: salt eel, Manmok

In short

Manmok is a Japanese restaurant on Seolleung-ro 82-gil in Gangnam, Seoul, specializing in charcoal-grilled Gochang freshwater eel. At dinner, the writer had two dinner-only dishes, hanwoo nabe (Korean beef hot pot, ₩63,000) and premium salt-grilled eel (₩55,000), finished with hojicha and matcha desserts; the clear, deep hanwoo nabe broth and the Kanto-style salt-grilled eel, with excess fat cooked off, were both satisfying. Manmok is a good fit for a neat, upscale eel restaurant near Seolleung Station for a team dinner or an anniversary date.

As an eel specialist, Manmok serves grilled eel, eel rice bowls and eel nabe (hot pot), and it also sells hanwoo (Korean beef) nabe.

What we ate at Manmok for dinner

Side dishes at Manmok

Since I ordered the hanwoo nabe and grilled eel, lots of side dishes came out! There aren't many kinds, but they were neat and clean!

Dinner-only hanwoo nabe (Korean beef hot pot), ₩63,000

Manmok's dinner-only hanwoo nabe is ₩63,000. I'm told it's made with 1++ hanwoo grilled once over charcoal for deep flavor, then served with a clear, light broth. Once you taste the broth, you can't help but go "kuh!" It's so warm and deep.

It honestly felt like it cured a hangover from drinking years ago, haha. It's clear and light yet so deep in flavor that I gave the broth a thumbs-up.

The clean broth is packed with a variety of vegetables and hanwoo, and with so many vegetables it was great to enjoy a bit of everything along with the meat.

Mushrooms, tofu, napa cabbage and other vegetables in the hanwoo nabe

You get mushrooms, tofu, napa cabbage, water dropwort, bok choy and more, with all sorts of textures and flavors, and it feels really healthy.

And! The meat, the star of the dish, isn't just any meat, it's 1++ hanwoo. It's grilled over charcoal once before going in, so the more you chew, the nuttier and richer it gets.

Dip it in the various sauces and it vanishes in no time.

Dinner-only premium salt-grilled eel, ₩55,000

Manmok's dinner-only premium grilled eel comes with your choice of sauce or salt and costs ₩55,000. I'm told it's Gochang freshwater eel grilled slowly over charcoal to bring out the eel's natural flavor.

Manmok is a Japanese restaurant specializing in eel rice bowls. They reportedly make every eel dish only with freshwater eel from Gochang, considered one of Korea's best eel-producing regions. Since they manage everything strictly from origin to selection, the eel quality can't help but be good, and it's known for deep flavor without any gamey smell. So I chose the unseasoned salt-grilled eel, and it was outstanding.

To preserve the eel's texture and light flavor, Manmok reportedly sticks to the Kanto-style method: grill the eel once, steam it, then finish it over charcoal.

So! The eel's characteristic greasiness is reduced and it doesn't feel heavy to eat. Eel is delicious, but if you sometimes find it too oily, you'll be totally happy with Manmok's grilled eel.

It's really soft, clean, nutty and light, with no greasiness at all. Please try it!!

Hojicha and matcha desserts

Manmok also serves dessert after the meal. I had one hojicha (roasted green tea) and one matcha, and both were charming.
