Sokcho IC bakery café: kid-approved squid ink potato bread, Bultan
In short
Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵) is a bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Nohak-dong, Sokcho, serving signature potato bread made with squid ink, jjondeugi (chewy snack strips) in three flavors and a Moosetoy painting activity. On the last day of a Sokcho trip, after a breakfast of hwangtae haejangguk (dried pollack hangover soup), the writer's child asked for bread, so the family took out one box of Bultan potato bread and a 12-piece jjondeugi set. The child said Bultan's potato bread tasted better than the dujjonku (Dubai chewy cookie) they usually love, making it a satisfying snack for the drive home.

Last day in Sokcho: a bakery stop after hangover soup
Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵) is a bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil, near Sokcho IC, so it was an easy stop on the way home. After a fun Sokcho trip, breakfast is always hwangtae haejangguk (dried pollack hangover soup) for me, and then my kid suddenly said they wanted bread. Luckily there's a great Sokcho bakery near my favorite soup place, so we stopped by. (Being near the IC made it convenient.)
- Address: 34-20 Haksapyeong-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon, South Korea (1F, Hakdong 1028)
- Hours: 09:00–17:00

A Sokcho bakery with such a cute name, !!!Bultan Gamja (Burnt Potato)!!! You can grab coffee for whoever's driving and the bread your kid wants, all in one stop. (The parking lot is nice and wide too, so super easy!)

How much is the potato bread, and is there a discount?
A box of potato bread has 4 pieces, and you get 10% off when you buy 3 boxes, so lots of people were buying 3. It's the shop's signature bread and also its only bread. We'd had a big breakfast, so I took just one box. La la la~~~

At the counter they'd cut up some bread for tasting. A sample corner~~ (It looked like the owner and staff make the drinks and coffee, and they were middle-aged or older.)

Atmosphere and seating at Bultan Gamja
The shop has high ceilings and feels airy. There are lots of sofa seats, and plenty of people were relaxing comfortably. We wanted to leave early because of traffic, so we ordered takeout. Traffic is the unavoidable part of a weekend Sokcho trip, though.

What else do they sell? Jjondeugi and Moosetoy
Besides bread and coffee, they have jjondeugi (chewy snack sticks) in three flavors (crab, squid, dakgangjeong, or sweet fried chicken) and Moosetoy.

Paint your own ceramic figure: Moosetoy, ₩10,000
A ceramic figure you make yourself: !!!!!Moosetoy!!!!! One corner was full of celebrity autographs. ※Moosetoy is said to be a ceramic art toy born from a collaboration between a commercial director and a Pororo designer!!!!

If you paint in the café, they lend you drawing pens too. The Moosetoy painting experience is ₩10,000.

If you come at the start of a Sokcho trip with your kid or partner, it seems like a nice thing to paint at a leisurely pace.

How does it taste? My kid says better than dujjonku
Bultan Gamja bread is made with squid ink, and the box of 4 felt hefty.

Crunchy slime is trending these days, and it gives off a slight hint of that. The outside of the bread is coated in grain powder, they say.

For some reason my kid compared it to dujjonku (the Dubai-style chewy cookie they usually love) and said this one was tastier! The outside is sweet with sugar, and the inside is generously filled with cream cheese, butter and potato, so it's rich and savory.
※They say no synthetic additives are used at all. The shelf life is shorter, so they have to make small batches often, but to keep the food healthy they follow a rule of baking and selling on the same day.

How much is Sokcho jjondeugi? A 12-piece set for ₩10,000
Jjondeugi at Bultan Gamja is ₩1,000 each!!!! 12 for ₩10,000, so I got the set. Honestly jjondeugi is sold everywhere in Sokcho, but I'm glad I got it.
※They say Sokcho jjondeugi takes the national snack and gives it a Sokcho touch in three flavors: red crab and squid, both local specialties, and dakgangjeong (sweet fried chicken)!!!

In that extra-long tunnel, the jjondeugi was great for staying awake ♡ It tastes so good that I kept reaching for more.
