Weekday bingsu happy hour at Maekmundong, a cafe lounge in Gwangju

In short

Maekmundong is a two-floor complex on Mareuk-ro in Seo-gu, Gwangju, with a dining room on the first floor and a cafe and lounge bar on the second. On an evening visit to the second-floor lounge, the fruit basket bingsu (shaved ice, ₩19,800) came piled with seasonal fresh fruit and was only lightly sweetened, so the fruit itself led, alongside an iced cafe latte (₩5,800) and an americano (₩4,600). Maekmundong also runs a bingsu happy hour discount on weekdays from 3pm to 5pm, so timing the visit pays off.

What kind of place is Maekmundong?

Maekmundong is a café and restaurant in Gwangju's Sangmu district, at 24 Mareuk-ro, Seo-gu. It's open daily 11:00–23:00.

I visited Maekmundong, a bingsu spot everyone raves about in Gwangju's Sangmu district. 1F Dining Room 2F Cafe & Lounge Bar It's a combined space with a restaurant and café — the first-floor restaurant is Blue Ribbon-certified, and the second floor runs as a café. With this sweltering weather lately I've been craving something cold, and Maekmundong's bingsu was exactly right haha 😋 Great for a full meal-plus-dessert course, or just to enjoy the café lounge on its own with zero pressure — Maekmundong, a real Gwangju gem!!

Pony Festival photo zone and the way up to the second floor

To mark the Year of the Horse, there's a cute, lovable Pony Festival–themed photo zone that's great for pictures. You can easily get from the first floor to the second by stairs or elevator!! Since I went in the evening, there were a lot of people waiting downstairs for a table, and I heard the food is great — I'd love to come back next time just for a meal.

Which cakes are in Maekmundong's showcase?

The showcase on Maekmundong's second floor is lined with seasonal cakes. Cherry fondant, basque cheesecake, kiwi yogurt musk melona shiru, chocolate banana brulee, peach earl grey gateau, and more — each one bursting with the sweetness of the season, and every single one boasting top freshness inside the case, and just plain pretty!! Whole cakes can be ordered too, so it seems perfect to reserve one in advance as a gift for a special occasion.

I thought it was just a Gwangju café famous for bingsu, but it turns out it's a dessert spot loaded with seasonal fruit cakes and offbeat drinks too!! The cakes are made from scratch daily, using their own baked sponge, house-made compote, and 100% fresh cream, so you can trust what you're buying even more. They also sell cute little candles, so it's great for lightly celebrating an anniversary too!!

Second-floor lounge atmosphere and the weekday happy hour

Maekmundong's café lounge has high ceilings that give it a real sense of openness, and the standout is the stylish ceiling lighting that feels like a hotel lounge!! Overall the tables are large and the chairs are cushy, so it's comfortable for anyone — the atmosphere works well whether you're coming with family, friends, or a partner. If you order bingsu between 3 and 5pm on a weekday, you get a happy hour discount, so it seems worth timing your visit to catch that.

How does the fruit basket bingsu taste?

Fruit Basket (₩19,800) Iced Café Latte (₩5,800) Americano (₩4,600) That's what I ordered! The fruit basket bingsu, piled generously with seasonal fresh fruit, wasn't just gorgeous to look at — the fruit was fresh and it tasted great too.

With all kinds of fresh fruit on smooth, fine milk shaved ice, the fruit basket looks cooling just to look at!! Bingsu really is the best in the scorching summer!! 😋 Overall it wasn't too sweet and let the fruit's natural flavor shine, and the rich house-made raspberry yogurt sauce was delicious too. With six flavors — apple watermelon, musk melon, peach, fresh mango, fruit basket, and black sesame — picking your favorite is half the fun at Maekmundong's café lounge, what do you think?!
