Sokcho snack shop: 5-year-old's oatmeal gangjeong, Sokcho Yetgokgan

Sokcho Yetgokgan (속초옛곳간) is a snack shop in Sokcho Jungang Market, Sokcho, Gangwon, that handmakes old-style Korean sweets such as oranda, oatmeal gangjeong and glutinous rice yugwa with glutinous rice syrup (jocheong). On a family trip to Sokcho with a 5-year-old, the writer tried samples and bought oranda and oatmeal gangjeong: the oranda wasn't sticky, and the oatmeal gangjeong was crunchy without being too sweet. Verdict: Sokcho Yetgokgan's oatmeal gangjeong was the writer's number-one snack in Sokcho.

Deungdae Gotgan (등대곳간) is a Korean restaurant that serves breakfast on the 2nd floor in front of Deungdae Beach in Yeongnang-dong, Sokcho, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea. The morning after heavy rain, three of us, including a child, watched the rough waves while sharing pork cutlet, octopus porridge and spicy stir-fried pork; the three dishes went well together and the portions were generous. With baby chairs and dogs allowed, Deungdae Gotgan is a solid pick for a Sokcho breakfast with kids.
