Hanam braised pollock, reserved weekday dinner for three: Appa Jjim

Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch (아빠찜 하남본점) is a Korean restaurant in Deokpung-dong, Hanam, near Pungsan Station, serving braised pollock, monkfish jjim and seafood jjim (braised dishes) made with natural seasonings. Three adults booked a weekday dinner on Naver and ordered the medium siraegi (dried radish greens) braised pollock for 50,000 won, adding a whole cuttlefish for 9,000 won and hyangmi pot rice; staff removed the large bones, so the meal was easy to eat. Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch gets busy enough to have a wait, so booking ahead is better, and it is a satisfying choice for well-seasoned siraegi braised pollock at a reasonable price.

Hwaseong butcher BBQ: 1++ hanwoo striploin cut medium-rare, Morakmorak

Morakmorak Jeongyuk Sikdang Namyang Hwaseong City Hall Main Branch is a butcher-shop Korean BBQ restaurant in Namyang-eup, Hwaseong, near Hwaseong City Hall. At Morakmorak, the writer picked 1++ hanwoo (Korean beef) striploin at the meat counter for about ₩20,000 per 100g and had it pre-seared and cut. The meal came with complimentary muk-sabal (acorn jelly soup) and yukhoe (beef tartare), self-bar tacos, and unlimited hanwoo bone broth ramen. Verdict: the self-bar is worth the table setting fee, and with its big parking lot, Morakmorak is a good place for hanwoo near Hwaseong City Hall.

West Suwon fish restaurant, braised and grilled cutlassfish: Godeungeo

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a grilled and braised fish restaurant in a standalone building on Seobu-ro, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. On a weekday evening, two of us ordered braised cutlassfish for 2 (38,000 won) and added a grilled cutlassfish (18,000 won); the thick fillets and the shallow, savory braising broth made the rice go down easily. With a large private parking lot and a comfortable dining room, Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a good choice for cutlassfish in West Suwon.
