Hapjeong rib spot for a blossom date: mild kimchi ribs, Bongmaruji
In short
Bongmaruji Hapjeong (봉마루집 합정점) is a Korean restaurant specializing in galbi-jjim (braised short ribs) on Yanghwa-ro 6-gil, between Sangsu Station and Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. A spicy-food lover and her spice-shy boyfriend ordered the aged kimchi braised ribs at level 1 heat, worried the dish would be too mild and get tiresome, but the tender meat and rich savory flavor had them clearing the pot. Bongmaruji Hapjeong: the braised rib spot we picked on a concert day
Bongmaruji Hapjeong (봉마루집 합정점) is a braised rib restaurant near Sangsu and Hapjeong Stations, and this is where we ordered the aged kimchi braised ribs. My boyfriend and I were in Seoul for a Snacktown concert, and when you come to Seoul, a great restaurant is a must, right..! This time we decided to try galbi-jjim (braised short ribs) through Supermembers, haha. The rib place we chose is~~! Bongmaruji Hapjeong!☆
What do you think!! I filmed this right when the food came out because it was so beautiful, haha. We ordered the aged kimchi braised ribs~!

Getting to Bongmaruji Hapjeong from Sangsu Station, and parking
Bongmaruji Hapjeong is about a 6-minute walk from Sangsu Station, and there is a paid parking lot right in front. When we arrived, cherry blossom petals were raining down in front of the restaurant and it was so beautiful >_< If you come by car, just park in the paid lot out front!

Seating and restroom at Bongmaruji Hapjeong
Inside there are tables for 4, and more seats toward the back, haha. It isn't cramped, which I liked~ By the way, the restroom is outside. Grab the key, a spatula-shaped keychain, by the door and you're set!

Check the menu photos for what's on offer~~! haha

Can you adjust the spice level of the braised ribs at Bongmaruji?
Bongmaruji Hapjeong lets you adjust the heat for each main dish, so even spice wimps can relax. After much deliberation, this is what we ordered! Good~~☆
Also, if you leave a Naver receipt photo review, you get extra noodles/add-ons and ade for free! (Wow) A proper Hapjeong Station rib place with events like this, haha

Side dishes and heotgae tea
The side dishes at Bongmaruji Hapjeong aren't overly strong, and the water is brewed with heotgae (hovenia fruit) tea. I loved even that, haha. They also give you bean sprouts, which are fine either added to the ribs or eaten on their own, so not bad~

How tender is the meat in the aged kimchi braised ribs?
The aged kimchi braised ribs at Bongmaruji Hapjeong mostly come with the bones already removed, and even where there was a bone, a gentle touch with tongs and scissors slid the meat right off. The food came out a little later, and the look of it, wow!! Right away we enjoyed the sight of the green onion strips and aged kimchi piled on top, then went snip-snip with the scissors!! haha
Can you see the meat? Every single bite was so tender that we kept marveling as we ate, haha. This is what a Sangsu Station braised rib spot looks like!!
Fluffy steamed egg, a.k.a. bouncy steamed egg
About halfway through the ribs, the fluffy steamed egg (gyeran-jjim) arrived, and I was shocked at how it filled a pretty big bowl..! My boyfriend and I had a bet on how many eggs went into it, and I'm guessing about 4, haha. The menu calls it "fluffy," but it looked so bouncy that I temporarily renamed it bouncy steamed egg, hehehe.
It isn't strongly seasoned at all, so I think young kids could eat it well~! Just be careful, the bowl is hot!!
Level 1 heat aged kimchi ribs: too mild for a spicy-food lover?
As a spicy-food lover, I ordered the aged kimchi braised ribs at level 1 with my spice-wimp boyfriend, and we finished everything without getting tired of it. Actually, I had a worry I hadn't said out loud.. we ordered level 1 because he's a spice wimp, and I was afraid it would be too mild and get boring, but....

Hehehe! We devoured it in no time~~?? We never got bored and scraped the plate clean>_< My one regret is not having room for fried rice,,,ㅠㅠㅠ With just the two of us we nearly burst, haha. I don't think you need to order too much!!!

The giant ade from the receipt photo review
When we left a receipt photo review at Bongmaruji Hapjeong, out came a huge ade, wow. In case you can't picture the size, I put a 500ml water bottle next to it, haha. After stuffing ourselves with ribs, round two with the ade was a bit of a struggle, lol! (A very happy struggle)
Bongmaruji Hapjeong: overall verdict
- The clean atmosphere was the first thing we noticed when we walked in.
- As soon as the ribs arrived, the strong aroma of aged kimchi rose up and raised our expectations.
- The meat isn't dry at all and is super tender.
- Rather than harshly spicy, it was the savory, umami-rich kind of flavor.
- Good as a regular meal, and also a safe recommendation for a family dinner.
- Overall satisfaction was high, and we'd like to come back.
