Daejeon pasta restaurant for a mother-daughter dinner: Plate
In short
Plate is a fresh-pasta restaurant in an alley near Jungang-ro Station in Seonhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, where the noodles are made in-house. On a third visit with her mother, the writer arrived after work just before 6pm and ordered the abalone gaewoo cream pasta (15,900 won; gaewoo is abalone innards) with pappardelle and the scallop uni pasta (15,900 won) with the standard spaghetti. With 12 noodle types to choose from and a good atmosphere for the price, Plate suits a mother-daughter dinner or a date equally well.

I was craving pasta today so I went with my mom to Plate, a famous fresh-pasta spot in Seonhwa-dong, Daejeon.

Plate: our third visit as mother and daughter
This was already our third visit as a mother-daughter duo. We've come a few times before, and it's affordable but still delicious, so we came back again after a while haha. We came once for dinner and once for weekend lunch, and the atmosphere is so good for the price that it's also nice for a date.
We'd ordered pork ribs, bacon cacio e pepe, salad, abalone gaewoo cream pasta, and the signature round lasagna before, and everything was good haha.
Weekday 6pm — recommend an opening run
It's usually pretty busy, so today I left work right on time and arrived just before 6, and after 6 the seats were almost all filled. It's the same at lunch, there are quite a lot of customers, so I'd recommend getting there right at opening. There were quite a few couples and groups of friends dining too.
It's in an alley near Jungangno Station, so it's also good to stop by for a meal after buying bread at Sungsimdang — Plate, a Seonhwa-dong fresh-pasta restaurant that makes its own noodles in-house.
Inside Plate's Seonhwa branch

It's cozy and has a nice atmosphere haha. There were coat hooks and aprons near the entrance too.

Pickles, salt, and pepper are provided as standard.

The house-made pickles are nice and crunchy.
Plate's menu and 12 noodle options

At Plate in Seonhwa-dong, you get to pick from 12 noodle types once you choose your pasta dish, letting you match it to your taste. Besides the 12 noodles, you can also order it as a risotto made with rice and barley.
Even if you're not sure which noodle goes best with which pasta, it's fine — there's a basic recommended noodle for each dish, so you can just go with that.
- Fresh noodles - Spaghetti: pairs well with all kinds of sauces
- Fresh noodles - Spinach spaghetti: subtle flavor and soft texture
- Fresh noodles - Squid ink spaghetti: deep flavor and chewy texture
- Fresh noodles - Tagliatelle: flat, like kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), holds sauce well
- Fresh noodles - Pappardelle: wide noodle with a dumpling-like chew, good with heavy sauces
- Fresh noodles - Pici: made only from water and flour, thick and firm
- Dried noodles - Linguine: flat and long, pairs well with oil sauces
- Dried noodles - Penne: tube-shaped, pairs well with cream or rosé sauces
- Dried noodles - Fusilli: spiral shape that holds sauce well
- Dried noodles - Farfalle: bow-tie shape, pairs well with soft sauces
- Dried noodles - Conchiglie: shell shape that scoops up sauce for a fuller texture
- Dried noodles - Rigatoni: thick tube shape, pairs well with rich sauces
Besides all these noodles and pasta dishes, there are also potato gnocchi, salad, steak, and pork rib menus, plus a set option where you can add bread, salad, and soup for ₩4,000 more. They also sell a variety of wines, including a house wine, which was nice.
This time we ordered the abalone gaewoo cream pasta that my mom loved before, and the scallop uni pasta. It took about 15–20 minutes this time. Since it's made fresh to order, it did take a bit of time to come out haha.
Abalone gaewoo cream pasta (₩15,900)

Rich, silky abalone gaewoo cream pasta!
The sauce is nicely seasoned and salty, and I ordered it with the recommended pappardelle — the wide noodle with that dumpling-like chew — which paired really well with the heavy, silky abalone gaewoo cream sauce.

My mom enjoyed it again, which made me happy. It had big chunks of abalone and felt really substantial! There were also shishito peppers in it, which went surprisingly well. It seemed to make the flavor of the abalone gaewoo cream pasta feel a bit cleaner.
Scallop uni pasta (₩15,900)

It had mussels, scallops, and shishito peppers too, which helped tame the uni's flavor, which can sometimes be a bit fishy. You couldn't really see the uni at a glance, but its aroma was quite strong.
It paired well with the recommended basic spaghetti noodle.

Yum yum.

That's my review of visiting Plate, a famous fresh-pasta restaurant in Seonhwa-dong, Daejeon.
