Dangjin fish restaurant's half-mackerel kids' set: Hwadeogeuro Gan

In short

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Dangjin Wondang Branch (화덕으로간고등어 당진원당점) is a wood-fired grilled fish Korean restaurant on Wondang-ro in Dangjin, Chungnam. The kids' mackerel set, ordered for a fish-loving son, came with half a mackerel served whole rather than in small pieces, while the adults added grilled Atka mackerel and braised mackerel with radish, and the self-serve bar offered perilla oil bibimbap, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and nurungji (scorched rice). Hwadeogeuro Gan in Dangjin is an easy, relaxed place to eat out with kids.

Full grilled fish spread at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Dangjin Wondang Branch

My fish-loving son gets to eat all he wants today

My son is basically all-in whenever fish is on the table haha🤣 He especially loves grilled fish — if I pick the flesh off and put it on his rice, he eats it up so happily!

But moms know this... loving that your kid loves fish is great, hating to grill it at home is a whole other thing😂 (sorry...🙄) The smell spreads through the whole house, oil splatters everywhere, and after eating there's the pan and cleanup to deal with...

So even though I know he loves it, at some point I just stopped making fish as often. (Really... sorry...😅) And weirdly, I never grill it well either.. (sorry sorry🙏) lol

So this day, no hesitation — eating out! We went to Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Dangjin Branch. Son, mom's not grilling today. Eat all you want🐟🤣

Fish I can't grill at home, but can eat freely here

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Dangjin Wondang Branch serves fish grilled in a wood-fired oven, which feels totally different from pan-frying at home. A place like this is such a relief for a family that loves fish.

Mom gets to sit comfortably without worrying about the smell, and my son gets to eat all the fish he wants~ That's reason enough to eat out, right? lol

I found this place while looking for somewhere filling to eat in Dangjin, and if you like grilled fish in Dangjin, it's worth a visit.

The kids' mackerel set — the portion was bigger than expected

My son ordered the kids' mackerel set at Hwadeogeuro Gan. I figured, since it's a kids' menu, it would come as one or two small pieces. But nope... half a mackerel came out whole!😳

I expected pieces, so I was surprised it came properly whole like that. A total win for my fish-loving son! I picked the flesh off and gave it to him with rice, and of course he ate it all up.

There you go, son. Since mom's been too lazy to grill fish often at home, eat all you want here today lol🐟🤣

Grilled Atka mackerel and braised mackerel with radish for the adults

I personally ordered the grilled Atka mackerel and braised mackerel with radish, both of which I usually love. One grilled, one braised! Today it's a proper full fish spread🤣

The Atka mackerel was light and clean to eat, and the braised mackerel with radish, with the sauce soaked deep into the radish, was another treat with rice.

Ordering the braised dish along with the grilled one instead of just grilled fish alone meant we had more variety to go with rice — that was nice.

Koreans really do run on rice — Korean food is the best 👍

Made a proper perilla oil bibimbap at the self-serve bar

The self-serve bar at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Dangjin Wondang Branch lets you make your own bibimbap (mixed rice bowl). You can choose between sesame oil and perilla oil — our family didn't even hesitate, straight to perilla oil!🤣

A spoonful of bibimbap next to a piece of grilled fish

Rice in, namul (seasoned vegetables) in, mix it up with perilla oil~ a spoonful of bibimbap, then a bite of fish... why does rice go down so easily?😂 We came for fish and ended up cleaning up a whole bibimbap too.

The self-serve bar is more packed than you'd think

The self-serve bar has way more than just bibimbap ingredients.

  • Meat
  • Lettuce wraps
  • Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes)
  • Soup
  • Nurungji (scorched rice)
  • Side dishes

When you eat out with kids, you always end up agonizing over separate adult and kid menus, but here the self-serve bar lets you grab whatever's needed for either — much easier to eat with your kid.

My son had a bite of tteokbokki between bites of fish, a bite of nurungji between bites of rice🤣 Eat whatever you want today lol

As a mom, this is the kind of eating out I love

Kids get to eat as much as they want, and mom doesn't have to grill fish at home! Honestly, that's the most important part🤣

Namul and other side dishes served like a home-cooked meal

Raising kids means even a single meal is a whole process — deciding what to make, cooking, feeding, then washing up. My job..🙄 Fish especially, even after the delicious eating, leaves you with the smell and the cleanup homework. Here, along with the grilled fish, there were namul side dishes and other banchan I rarely make at home, all laid out like a home-cooked spread — I loved that.

The kids get to eat fish and rice happily, and mom doesn't have to prep every single side dish — just sit down and eat together, done! Just knowing 'I'm not cooking dinner tonight!' made this outing feel that much more relaxing🤣

If your family has a kid who loves fish, I think it's worth occasionally solving a home-cooked-style meal by eating out like this.

Final thoughts

My son ate all the fish he wanted🐟, mom got freed from grilling fish🤣, and dad ate a hearty meal of rice🍚 — a very successful outing today!

Thanks to my fish-loving son, I finally got to properly enjoy grilled fish after a long while. Fish I keep putting off at home because of the smell — eat all you want out here, son🤣

When the kid eats well, mom is happy — and when mom is comfortable, eating out is even happier.
