The writer visited on a weekday just after lunchtime and had shabu-shabu in bonito and spicy broths, followed by Vietnamese rice-paper rolls, salad bar sides, soft-serve ice cream and coffee. Staff at Shabu20 pointed out a parking space and the roughly 2cm step at the entrance before being asked. Shabu20 Daegu Bokhyeon branch is memorable for its clean, fresh ingredients and thoughtful service.

With its own parking and roomy seating, Shabu20 Daegu Bokhyeon branch is a good-value shabu-shabu buffet for family and group meals.

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch is a raw beef restaurant specializing in mungtigi (thick-cut fresh raw beef) and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) in the Bokhyeon Five-Way Intersection food alley, Buk-gu, Daegu. Three people ordered the large A course for 3 (₩85,000) and a self-serve yukhoe rice ball (₩8,000), and the writer, trying raw beef for the first time, found it melted softly rather than being chewy as expected. The verdict: the ₩8,000 yukhoe rice ball at Bonghwa Saenggogi, with as much yukhoe as rice, is a must-order on the next visit.

Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae (면식당 대구보건대점) is a ramen and katsu restaurant on Yeongsong-ro in Buk-gu, Daegu, right in front of Indang Hall at Daegu Health College. Three adults and a baby visited at a quieter hour, ordered the set for two (tonkotsu ramen, handmade pork loin katsu, mozzarella cheese katsu, smoky mini buta-don pork rice bowl and lemonade) and added cold soba; the lemonade came in a big bottle that was easy to split three ways. Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae is a reliable Japanese spot in Chilgok where every dish lands, and the regular waiting line makes sense.

The writer, who eats at Myeonsikdang regularly with family, came back at opening time on a weekend for lunch and ordered the handmade sirloin katsu, the big buta-don (pork rice bowl) and the karaage curry rice bowl. The katsu was thick, the buta-don rich and savory, and the curry bowl mildly spicy. With solo seating as well, Myeonsikdang is a Chilgok Japanese spot that works for eating alone or with the whole family.
