Hwasimdo (화심도) is a smoke-seared pork restaurant in Beomeo-dong, Suseong, Daegu, near Suseong Stadium Station. On a rainy Saturday evening the writer had pork belly, pork neck and the new gabrisal (pork shoulder-neck cut) at Hwasimdo, then finished with kimchi fried rice and mulnaengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles). The chewy gabrisal was the best of the three cuts, and Hwasimdo's kimchi fried rice is well worth ordering.
Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch (온기정 수성못점) is a Japanese restaurant specializing in tendon (tempura rice bowls) and donburi rice bowls, on the ground floor of the Junbrow building next to Suseongmot in Suseong, Daegu. The writer parked easily in Ongijeong's private lot with help from staff, ate the steak & raw salmon rice bowl and tempura set, and looked around the sofa seats, the separate group space at the back and the open kitchen. The verdict: Ongijeong Suseong Lake Branch is a good place to combine lunch with a Suseongmot stroll, without worrying about parking.
Jungguksung Ilgeup Yorisa-ui Jip (중국성 일급요리사의 집) is a neighborhood Chinese restaurant in a residential part of Jisan-dong, Suseong, Daegu. After water play, the writer and a child ordered lard-fried ganjajang (black bean noodles), spicy jjamppong (seafood noodle soup) and tangbokbap, a half sweet-and-sour pork, half fried rice plate, and the child ate almost all of the ganjajang. With half-and-half dishes, set menus and cash discounts, Jungguksung Ilgeup Yorisa-ui Jip is an easy, affordable pick for families who want Chinese food done right.
Haenyeo Sotbap Suseong Direct Store is a Korean restaurant specializing in sotbap (rice cooked in a stone pot) on Cheongsu-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu, near Suseongmot. Visiting around 1pm, just after the lunch rush, the writer ordered the highland radish bulgogi sotbap (22,000 won) and the Wando haenyeo abalone sotbap (24,000 won), topped with three whole abalone, and got shiitake tangsuyuk (sweet and sour mushrooms) and yangnyeom gejang (spicy marinated raw crab) as complimentary side dishes. Wrapping the highland radish bulgogi sotbap in fresh gim (roasted seaweed) doubles its savory flavor and is the combination to try at Haenyeo Sotbap Suseong Direct Store.
Aroke Daegu Sigi Branch is a single-story bakery café near Exit 2 of Gosan Station in Suseong, Daegu. On local election day, the blogger visited Aroke with a baby and tried three breads from the renewed bakery menu, including the garlic sweet potato pastry, along with drinks. The spacious room and soft seats made the visit easy with a baby. Verdict: Aroke is a standout pastry spot and a baby-friendly café whose decaf beans let nursing and pregnant mothers enjoy coffee too.
Jangpro Hanwoo Galbitsal (장프로한우갈빗살) is a hanwoo (Korean beef) BBQ restaurant on Deuran-ro in Suseong, Daegu, serving galbitsal (boneless rib meat) and sirloin. For a 2nd dating anniversary dinner with her boyfriend, the writer ordered one galbitsal and sirloin plate (first orders start at 400g) plus a hanwoo rib doenjang stew. The salchisal (chuck flap) melted in the mouth, and the salt on the table and self-bar refills were especially handy. Verdict: Jangpro Hanwoo Galbitsal is worth a return visit for good-value hanwoo on an anniversary.
Downtown Daegu Believe Heritage is a handmade burger shop on Deuran-ro in Suseong, Daegu, sharing one space with Clap Pizza. On an evening off without overtime, the writer and her husband ordered the cheeseburger and the classic cheeseburger side by side, and the thick-cut fries and the light, chewy-soft bun stood out most. Verdict: pick the Downtown cheeseburger for a rich beef-and-cheese hit, or the classic cheeseburger for a cleaner bite with fresh vegetables.
Cafe Dong-i Sicheol is a Korean set-meal (hansik bapsang) restaurant on Sinmae-ro in Suseong, Daegu, near Sinmae Market. We ordered three trays at Cafe Dong-i Sicheol: Grandma's stir-fried jjukkumi (webfoot octopus), fire-grilled pork, and crispy whole-shrimp Japanese curry. We also tried the fried-egg, multigrain rice and gopchang-gim seaweed service bar and finished with barley gangjeong for dessert. With a table full of side dishes and 1 hour of free parking at the Sinmae Market public lot, Cafe Dong-i Sicheol is a place I'd happily return to for a family meal.
Yeojin Hair Atelier Daegu Suseong is a premium hair salon at the Deulan-gil intersection in Suseong, Daegu. With hair damaged by a perm and the strain of parenting, the blogger booked a weekday daytime slot for the 5-step Hair Return Care clinic. Lying on a heated shampoo chair, she had the shampoo, spa, steam and blow-dry in about 1 hour, plus a fringe trim. Nearly a week later her hair was still glossy and soft, and she was very happy with how well the Yeojin Hair Atelier clinic restored it.
Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi (두근두근숯불갈비) is a charcoal-grilled pork galbi restaurant in Nobyeon-dong, Siji, in Suseong-gu, Daegu. On a rainy weekend evening, the blogger, her husband and their child ordered marinated pork galbi (200g for ₩12,000). The husband and wife each finished a whole pot of stew: the soft tofu stew (sundubu-jjigae) included with the meal and an extra doenjang (soybean paste) stew for ₩2,000. With half-cooked fried eggs, roasted seaweed and a yogurt dessert included, Dugeundugeun Sutbulgalbi is a good-value spot for a family dinner in Siji.
Jungguksung Ilgeup Yorisa-ui Jip (중국성 일급요리사의 집) is a neighborhood Chinese restaurant in Jisan-dong, Suseong, Daegu, said to have been open for 30 years. On a rainy-day lunch with a friend, the writer ordered the signature ganjajang (dry-fried black bean noodles), a large spicy seafood jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and a mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and especially liked the chewy house-made aged noodles and the spicy yet clean jjamppong broth. The building and restroom at Jungguksung Ilgeup Yorisa-ui Jip are basic, but it is a good local Chinese restaurant for a lunch with real home-style flavor and generous portions.
Clap Pizza Daegu Believe Heritage is a pizzeria on the first floor of the Believe Heritage shopping block in Beomeo-dong, Suseong, Daegu, serving the pizza people reportedly line up for in Cheongdam, Seoul. On a return visit, the writer again ordered Clap Pizza's signature truffle gorgonzola (large, listed as 34.8, i.e. ₩34,800), dipped it in garlic sauce and enjoyed it with family. Verdict: if you love truffle with gorgonzola cheese, the truffle gorgonzola at Clap Pizza in Beomeo-dong comes strongly recommended.
