Eochongye 1beonji (어촌계1번지) is a budget-friendly sashimi restaurant in Bandalseom, Ansan. On a Friday after work, the writer ordered the small seasonal sashimi platter for 42,000 won (salmon, mullet and flounder), made self-serve sushi, and finished with a spicy fish bone stew with added sujebi (hand-pulled dough flakes). Eochongye 1beonji serves generous portions even in the small size, and its rich stew broth makes it a good fit for company dinners and family meals.

Ansan Bandalseom hanwoo BBQ: ₩52,000 platter, galbitang, Cheongnyuok

Cheongnyuok (청류옥) is a newly opened butcher's-style restaurant serving hanwoo (Korean beef) and pork in Bandalseom, Ansan. The writer ordered a 400g 1st-grade hanwoo platter for 52,000 won and galbitang (beef short rib soup), and was happy with the sirloin and brisket, the spacious hall and private rooms, the cushioned chairs and the easy parking. Degree Gojan Branch is a bakery café on a main road in the central Gojan-dong shopping district of Ansan, Gyeonggi. Gojan-dong raw beef bar in Ansan: birthday welcome drink at Yuksul

Yuksul is a mungtigi (thick-cut raw beef) and yukhoe (beef tartare) bar near the Sarigol food alley in Gojan-dong, Ansan. The writer returned to Yuksul with friends for a birthday and ordered the signature Mungtigi Daepyo, basil clam pasta, lemon cream shrimp and a watermelon highball, and was also happy with the birthday welcome drink event and the complimentary radish soup. Banwolga (반월가) is an izakaya-style Korean pub with outdoor street-stall seating in Gojan-dong, Ansan, near Jungang Station. After booking on Naver, the writer visited Banwolga with a partner, started with Budweiser draft, then had the Banwolga bansang (set platter) with hanwoo (Korean beef) sashimi and yukhoe (beef tartare), plus a smoky Sichuan-style stir-fry of seafood and udon noodles, finishing by mixing a bowl of rice into the leftover sauce. Banwolga's music is low enough for easy conversation, and the draft beer alone makes it a Gojan-dong date bar worth revisiting.

Retro pork rib restaurant in Ansan: salt, garlic & BBQ ribs at Suamgol

Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul Ansan Hanyang University Station Branch (수암골 쪽갈비마을 안산한대앞역점) is a jjokgalbi (pork rib strip) restaurant on Rodeo Street by Exit 2 of Handaeap Station in Ansan, Gyeonggi. Salt, garlic and BBQ ribs plus 2 bowls of rice came to 55,000 won. The ribs arrive fully grilled, and a spicy soft tofu stew comes out first, so the wait never drags. With a spacious, clean retro dining room and group seating, Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul is worth considering for a get-together near Handaeap Station.

Brunch in Gojan, Ansan: bulgogi pilaf & corn pizza at Two Find Peter

Two Find Peter Ansan Gojan is a casual Italian restaurant in Hwanggeum Plaza in Gojan-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan. On a lunchtime brunch date with a husband who was craving pasta, the writer ordered corn pizza (21,000 won), ragù fettuccine (15,000 won) and beef bulgogi (marinated beef) pilaf (14,000 won), and enjoyed a relaxed meal thanks to the calm wood-toned interior and up to 2 hours of parking support at the nearby AW Parking Tower. The salty-savory bulgogi pilaf was the favorite of the day, and Two Find Peter Ansan Gojan is worth a return visit in the evening with wine.

Ido-dong, Ansan makguksu restaurant: special set with suyuk, Memilchon

Memilchon Ansan is a makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant serving Gangwon-do home-style food on Songho Food Alley (Songho Matgil) in Ido-dong, Sangnok-gu, Ansan, where the buckwheat is ground on a millstone in-house and made into noodles. The writer, a Memilchon regular for over 15 years, ordered the special set with friends to share makguksu, gamja ongsimi (potato dumplings) and suyuk (boiled pork), and found the suyuk softer and free of any gamey smell compared with bossam specialty restaurants. Verdict: at Memilchon, 70% buckwheat makguksu paired with suyuk is the most satisfying combination.

Ansan bar in Gojan: non-alcoholic beer, beef tendon hot pot, Susan

Susan Jang (수산장) is a Japanese-style izakaya in Gojan, Ansan, with fish tanks inside and outside and many seasonal seafood dishes. Two friends ordered spicy beef tendon hot pot (26,000 won), spring cuttlefish butter grill (29,000 won), a yuzu sake highball and non-alcoholic beer (5,000 won). The spicy hot pot was tasty, but the butter-grilled cuttlefish with three sauces was the highlight. Susan Jang fills up by around 7 pm, so arrive at opening time.

Pork galbi BBQ by Jungang Station, Ansan: no-drinks date at Yangsimso

Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch (양심소 안산고잔점) is a charcoal-grill Korean BBQ restaurant on the first floor of Praum City, between Jungang Station and Ansan City Hall in Ansan. A couple who don't drink went for dinner and grilled a 750g platter of domestic house-marinated pork galbi over white charcoal themselves, with complimentary yukhoe (beef tartare) and the brisket doenjang stew that comes with the meal. Yangsimso's lightly marinated 750g pork galbi platter turned out to be just the right amount for two.

Ansan bakery café with my daughter: sold-out egg sandwich, Flowerpot

Flowerpot Cafe Gojan Branch is a spacious bakery café in Gojan-dong, Ansan, behind AW Convention and near the Culture Plaza. On a visit with my daughter, we had the egg sandwich and Americano set (500 won off), a strawberry latte, walnut cream cheese bread and garlic baguette. The sandwiches had sold out by afternoon, so the owner gave us an egg sandwich she had set aside, and my daughter named it her favorite. For a sandwich-and-Americano brunch at Flowerpot Cafe, go in the morning.
