Yours Bake Shop Mokdong Main Branch is a European-style bakery near Paris Park in Mokdong, Yangcheon, Seoul, run by a couple who studied baking in France. The writer arrived at 11 a.m. for the Belem egg tart, limited to 200 a day, and bought egg tarts, salt bread, olive ciabatta and ratatouille focaccia, but the sandwiches had already sold out. With buttery salt bread and large egg tarts, Yours Bake Shop is a Mokdong bakery worth a return visit.

Late weekend gopchang in Mokdong: DIY-grilled couple set, Omokgyo

Omokgyo Gopchang (Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch) is a gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant on a quiet side street near Omokgyo Station in Mokdong, Yangcheon, Seoul. Two of us ordered the couple set of mixed gopchang, thinly sliced beef belly (usamgyeop), a gopchang hot pot bowl and fried rice late on a weekend night and grilled it ourselves. The gopchang burned black from our clumsy grilling, but the nutty garlic gopchang, the generous side dishes and the free soft tofu stew still satisfied. Omokgyo Gopchang is worth recommending for dinner and drinks near Omokgyo in Mokdong.

Seoul Korean BBQ at Omokgyo with waitlist perks: pork neck, Gamgol

Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong (감골연탄집 목동점) is a briquette-grilled Korean BBQ restaurant a one-minute walk from Exit 2 of Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. About a month after Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong opened, the writer went on a weekday evening with a friend. They ordered two servings of Julujuli special pork neck, Seolhwa kkodeulsal (a chewy pork cut), briquette fried rice, flat bibim noodles and Changdongne shrimp steamed egg, and the waitlist perks and basil ssamjang stood out. If you love smoky briquette flavor, Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong is a Mokdong Korean BBQ worth trying at least once for after-work drinks, a family meal or a company dinner.

Omokgyo ramen shop with J-POP solo seats and tamagobap: Gyedan Ramen

Gyedan Ramen Mokdong Branch (계단라멘 목동점) is a tonkotsu ramen restaurant in the basement of the SBS Mokdong building near Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. In a clean dining room with J-POP playing, the writer ordered Gyedan Ramen (₩11,000), Motsu Ramen (₩12,000) and tamagobap (egg rice, ₩3,000). The highlights were the crispy fried tripe, the whole soft-boiled egg and the tamagobap, which turns into something like egg noodles when stirred into the broth. With plenty of solo seats, Gyedan Ramen Mokdong Branch works for office lunches and dinners, solo meals and dates alike.

Four-dish gopchang feast in Mokdong, windows wide open: Omokgyo

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant near Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul, serving handmade whole-garlic gopchang from a mother's 30-year-old recipe. With the big windows thrown open like a terrace, the writer worked through four dishes: traditional handmade garlic gopchang, grilled daechang (beef large intestine), Jumunjin whelk bibim noodles and the Omokgyo fried rice for the whole grill, and enjoyed the free side dishes, the fire show and complimentary pre-meal vitamins. For a proper gopchang course in a spacious, comfortable room, Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is well worth recommending.

Sinjeong loach soup spot: snail and siraegi broth, Songga Chueotang

Songga Chueotang (송가네 추어탕) is a chueotang (loach soup) restaurant on Woljeong-ro in Yangcheon, Seoul, near Sinjeong Intersection Station. On a chilly evening, the writer and a friend ordered two servings of snail loach soup at 14,000 won per serving, which came with bossam (boiled pork) and pot rice, and the writer, who doesn't usually enjoy soup, nearly emptied the bowl of broth packed with siraegi (dried radish greens) and snails. Songga Chueotang is a place worth returning to whenever you crave a hearty bowl of soup.

Korean BBQ for two friends at Omokgyo: pork neck beats belly, Gamgol

Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong (감골연탄집 목동점) is a retro Korean BBQ restaurant right outside Exit 2 of Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul, where meat is grilled over real coal briquettes. Two friends shared 2 servings of briquette coarse-salt pork belly, 1 serving of jul-moksal pork neck, steamed egg and Geungnak flat bibim milmyeon (spicy mixed cold wheat noodles), and the pork neck, more tender than the belly, impressed most. Verdict: next time at Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong, order more pork neck instead of pork belly.
