Pho restaurant near Sunae Station with bun cha and shrimp balls: Camon
In short
Camon Bundang Sunae Station Flagship is a Vietnamese pho restaurant that opened on Baekhyeon-ro 101beon-gil near Sunae Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. A writer who once lived in Ho Chi Minh City had pho, Camon bun cha (grilled pork with rice noodles) and shrimp balls there for a weekend lunch date with his wife, and the rich broth and bun cha sauce reminded him of his regular local spots in Vietnam. If you want a taste close to Vietnam, order the bun cha first at Camon Bundang Sunae Station Flagship.

Why we picked Camon Bundang Sunae Station Flagship for lunch near Sunae Station
Camon Bundang Sunae Station Flagship is a newly opened Vietnamese pho restaurant near Sunae Station, and we dropped in for lunch during a date in Bundang with my wife. It had been a while since our schedules lined up, so we planned a cozy weekend around Bundang and Pangyo. As the saying goes, even Mount Kumgang is better after a meal (food first!), and we spent a good while debating what to eat for a hearty lunch.

Then I remembered hearing that a new pho restaurant had opened near Sunae Station. It's a hot brand that has been spreading to new branches quickly and getting talked about. The name is Camon (Camon, which actually is usually pronounced "Cam on" in Vietnamese), meaning a warm "thank you." The building was right on our route, so we walked in without hesitation.

What we ordered at Camon Bundang Sunae Station Flagship

We ordered the signature pho, Camon bun cha (grilled pork with cold rice noodles and dipping sauce), and shrimp balls as a side. Some of you may know that I actually lived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I ate all kinds of pho every day there, from street-side local stalls to fancy restaurants, so I have pretty strict standards and can tell right away whether something is truly local style or not.

We sat down and ordered the signature pho along with the Camon bun cha, a dish I really love. We also added shrimp balls as a side, which looked crispy outside and moist inside. A small tip: if you join the store's notification service through Naver Map, you can get extra shrimp balls, so don't forget if you're visiting. Looking around, the place was already packed with office workers and residents from Sunae Station, so you can really feel its popularity.
Does Camon's pho taste like Vietnam?

Camon's pho broth tasted just like Vietnam, so much so that it reminded me of my regular spot in Ho Chi Minh City. Most of the pho shops that used to be in Korea were localized to Korean tastes, with broth more like a bone soup, rather than the aroma and flavor of Southeast Asia. That's tasty too, of course, but I had always missed the deep, intense flavor of the real thing.

But the moment we tasted the broth of Camon's signature dishes, both my wife and I couldn't help but exclaim.

The deeply simmered, rich broth carried a very strong Vietnamese local feel. I asked separately for extra cilantro and piled it on, and it felt like the memories of my regular restaurant from my Ho Chi Minh City days came flooding back.

How we ate the Camon bun cha sauce
For the Camon bun cha, we added the chili, lemon juice and pungent minced garlic served alongside to the sauce, to taste. Eaten that way, it was perfectly balanced.

How were the shrimp balls?
Camon's shrimp balls seemed to stray just a little from the traditional Vietnamese style, but the coating was crispy and the filling packed, the kind of thing anyone would like, and I enjoyed them a lot.

Camon Bundang Sunae Station Flagship: value for money and what to order
Prices at Camon Bundang Sunae Station Flagship are reasonable given today's cost of living, yet the quality is very close to a pho shop in Vietnam, so I never felt the money was wasted. Personally, if you come to Camon, the rich-broth pho is good, but I strongly recommend the bun cha, where you dip meat and noodles in a sweet and tangy sauce.

Even my wife, who is quite picky, was thrilled with the exotic yet clean flavors. When I paid, I asked the owner, who kindly told us that besides this Sunae Station flagship, there is one more branch in Bundang, at Jeongja.

Because this lunch was such a success, on our next Bundang date we plan to visit the Jeongja branch too and compare. Thanks to the great food and exotic atmosphere, it felt like a happy day, as if we'd taken a short trip abroad.
