Jungmun, Jeju Korean restaurant open all day: 2pm abalone porridge
In short
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a mackerel ssam-bap (rice and grilled mackerel wrapped in leaves) restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju, open from 9:30am with no break time, so travellers can eat at awkward hours. Arriving after 2pm because of the children's nap, the family ordered grilled tilefish with abalone hot-pot rice for 30,000 won, abalone porridge for 15,000 won and a handmade black pork cutlet for 15,000 won. The mackerel ssam-bap needs a minimum of two orders and was skipped, but Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has enough kid-friendly dishes to satisfy the whole family.

While looking for good places to visit in Jeju, I found Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥) — it opens early in the morning and has no break time, which makes it so much easier to plan a travel itinerary around.

When you're traveling around Jeju, restaurants that serve breakfast or let you eat at an awkward in-between hour are really precious. This place worked well no matter when we showed up. Even though we arrived past 2pm because of my kid's nap time, we could still eat comfortably until they wrapped up service at 3.

As soon as we arrived, the huge parking lot made things so easy. When you're traveling with kids, plenty of parking space is priority number one, so I already felt relieved before even walking in haha.

The building stands alone, and the path leading in by car was lined with flowers in bloom — genuinely pretty. Almost a shame I didn't get a photo of it haha.
At the entrance there's a Catch Table waitlist registration kiosk. We got lucky and walked straight in without waiting, but during peak hours you could register and wait comfortably.

Rows of appearances on famous TV shows and celebrity autographs were hanging on the wall — this really is one of those Jeju places worth visiting~!

Free tables even at 2pm: a big hall with rose garden window views
Walking inside, the space was huge. Family travelers, foreign guests, group parties — even past 2pm there were tons of customers.
We were seated by the window with a nice view of the garden. Seeing the rose garden outside through the window kept the whole meal from feeling cramped — it was lovely.

You order directly from a tablet at the table. I took photos of the menu, so click through to check it out~! The signature dish, godeungeo ssam-bap (grilled mackerel wrapped in lettuce with rice), requires a minimum order of two, so this time — with the kids' tastes in mind — we ordered the grilled tilefish abalone hot-pot rice, abalone porridge, and a black pork cutlet instead.

Side dishes and the free self-serve bar, with kids in mind
After we settled in, they set out the basic side dishes fairly quickly. Things like gim (dried seaweed) and soft tofu that little kids can eat without any fuss, which made it easy to feed my kids before the main dishes even arrived.

If any of the sides run low, or you want lettuce wraps or pork bulgogi, you can just help yourself at the self-serve bar.
There's an even wider variety of side dishes at the self-serve bar beyond the basics, so take a look around and grab more haha.
What we ordered: tilefish abalone hot-pot rice, abalone porridge, black pork cutlet

Grilled tilefish with abalone hot-pot rice, 30,000 won

This is the abalone hot-pot rice that came with our grilled tilefish set. Lifting the lid off the pot revealed a generous helping of abalone, sweet pumpkin, and seaweed — it looked absolutely delicious.

The tilefish was grilled nicely golden, with firm flesh and just the right amount of saltiness — perfect as a side dish for the kids' rice. I flaked the tilefish over the warm rice and abalone porridge, and both my daughters ate it right up. I was so proud of myself.
Abalone porridge, 15,000 won
The abalone porridge had the abalone innards mixed in, giving it a dark color and a strong savory aroma. Both my first and second kids ate it happily. Honestly, out of every abalone porridge I've had in Jeju so far, this was the richest and most savory.
If you're coming for breakfast, make sure to grab the Naver Place coupon and try it for free~!!

Handmade black pork cutlet, 15,000 won
We also ordered the handmade black pork cutlet as an extra. Being handmade clearly made a difference — the meat was really tender.

Both the kids and I enjoyed every bite. It really felt like Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap puts care into every single dish. This is a place you can bring your kids to without feeling sorry about it~!
Tilefish and pork bulgogi wraps, plus nurungji (toasted rice crust)
Since I couldn't try the mackerel ssam-bap, I made my own version of ssam (lettuce wraps) with what we had haha.
I laid the grilled tilefish flesh on lettuce and perilla leaves, topped it with rice and ssamjang (seasoned dipping sauce), and took a bite — turns out wrapping grilled fish like this is a real treat too haha.

Since everything we ordered was non-spicy, I was craving something with a kick, and the pork bulgogi at the self-serve bar was a great move. Wrapping kale, hot-pot rice, and the pork bulgogi together was genuinely delicious haha.

After we scooped out all the rice, they poured warm water into the pot to make a savory nurungji (scorched-rice) sungnyung. Finishing off with warm sungnyung settled the stomach nicely and cleaned the palate.
Finishing with sikhye (sweet rice drink) and coffee

Dessert was homemade sikhye (sweet rice punch), and it was the perfect ending haha. Full of rice grains too. Definitely try it~~! This was the real deal haha.

On the way out, there's even a vending machine for post-meal coffee. The service here is amazing~! I grabbed a warm milk coffee and finished off the meal with a clean, satisfying sip haha.
A walk through the Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap rose garden
After finishing our meal, we found a garden path out front where the roses we'd been admiring through the window all through lunch were blooming beautifully.
We strolled around a bit with the kids, played, took photos, and got some fresh air — it was lovely~!!
Verdict: is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap worth a late lunch with kids?

It was a little disappointing not to get to try the signature mackerel ssam-bap, but true to its reputation as a Jeju spot worth visiting, the grilled tilefish, abalone porridge, and cutlet were all dishes the kids ate well, so the whole family left satisfied. Next time I'll come back for the mackerel ssam-bap!
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap opens from 9:30am so breakfast is possible, and with no break time, it's ideal for dropping by at any awkward hour between travel plans. If you're looking for a Jeju spot near Jungmun that's easy to fit into your route and great to visit with kids, it's well worth stopping by.
