In short

Breakfast with parents at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap in Jungmun, Jeju
While looking for a breakfast spot to eat with my parents on our Jeju trip, I found Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥)! Since it was a trip with my parents, I thought hard about what to order, and this place let us have mackerel kimchi stew and abalone hot-pot rice together, so I went for a Jeju breakfast at this well-known spot.
Turns out the main dish was delicious, but the free abalone porridge and the self-serve bar were way more generous than I expected, so let me introduce it :)
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap: the exterior and the parking lot
The moment we arrived at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, I was startled by how huge the place was 😮

The restaurant grounds themselves are enormous, and the parking lot is huge too, so it was very easy to visit by car. Since there's no worry about parking, it seemed like a great spot not just for a family trip but for group dining with a lot of people.

Above all, I was surprised by how pretty the landscaping around the restaurant was..! We came for a meal but ended up busy taking photos of the lush green garden. Why is everywhere in Jeju so pretty!
Inside Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap: full-height windows and a garden view

The interior is just as spacious and pleasant as the exterior suggests. There are plenty of tables and generous space, so it seemed comfortable for families or groups, and right in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows you can see a beautifully landscaped garden. We ate while looking out at the green scenery, and the view was genuinely great 🍃 We went right at opening and ate leisurely — a great Jeju breakfast spot!
Free abalone porridge for morning visits

What I never expected to love so much at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was the abalone porridge!! If you visit in the morning, you get free abalone porridge with one order per adult. I thought little of it since it was free, but this thing is just insanely good…?

As you can tell just from the photo, the color is deep and it's packed with plenty of abalone. You could really taste the rich abalone flavor — hard to believe it was free! My parents said it was really delicious too and dug right in, so our satisfaction shot up before the main dish even arrived ✨ Personally, it left such an impression that I'd want to recommend this place separately just for its abalone porridge.

That said, I heard the free abalone porridge is limited to one order per adult and may run out early depending on the day. You can also order it separately, of course! Still, since it's nice to try it free if you can, haha, I'd say a morning visit doubling as breakfast is the way to go.
The self-serve bar: wrap vegetables, banchan and japchae

Another thing I really liked was the self-serve bar! True to a ssam-bap (lettuce-wrapped rice) restaurant, there was lettuce, perilla leaves, and several kinds of wrap greens ready, along with a wide variety of side dishes.

From garlic and chili that go well with the wraps to a variety of banchan (side dishes) and even japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), you could take as much as you liked.

Some places have a great main dish but disappointing basic side dishes, but here every single banchan was worth reaching for. My parents were happy with how tasty the side dishes were too, so I'd especially recommend this to anyone looking for a Jeju breakfast spot to bring their parents to.
What's on the menu at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

Aged-kimchi mackerel ssam-bap and abalone hot-pot rice, 72,000 won for four

✨ Old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap + abalone hot-pot rice, set for four, ₩72,000. A big pot arrived with a whole piece of well-fermented old kimchi on top, and underneath it, chunky, meaty mackerel.

The tangy, deep flavor of well-fermented sour kimchi went really well with the mackerel, and pulling off big chunks of mackerel flesh to eat with the kimchi was, quite literally, rice-thief material haha

It's a familiar combination, but that's exactly why it was such a satisfying, crowd-pleasing dish.
The abalone hot-pot rice that came with it had abalone, tot (sea mustard), sweet pumpkin, and various other ingredients mixed in.

Eating a piece of mackerel topped with old kimchi alongside the abalone hot-pot rice was delicious, and wrapping it in lettuce gave a completely different vibe — perfect for overeating at breakfast..🤣

After scooping out the rice, we poured water into the stone pot to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea). Eating warm, nutty sungnyung with a piece of well-fermented old kimchi on top was so good.
Personally, the most memorable part of this meal was still the abalone porridge! It's packed with abalone and has such a rich flavor that it's worth visiting in the morning just for that.
Is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap worth a Jeju breakfast?
From the free abalone porridge to the varied self-serve bar to the old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap and abalone hot-pot rice — Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was seriously, seriously generous. With a large parking lot, a pleasant interior, and a pretty garden view right outside the window, it was the perfect spot for a family trip with parents or a group meal. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a Jeju restaurant with a nice view for a Jungmun breakfast with their parents :)
