Dog-friendly café in Uijeongbu, inner terrace & choco Basque: Forerest

Forerest is a large forest-surrounded café in Nogyang-dong, Uijeongbu, that welcomes dogs and sells only one dessert, Basque cheesecake, in several flavors. The writer stopped by after a meal, sat at one of only 3 inner-terrace tables and ordered an iced Americano (5,500 won), limited-quantity orange juice (7,800 won) and chocolate and matcha Basque cheesecakes (8,000 won each), and was surprised that the chocolate Basque tasted like fresh chocolate. Forerest is a café worth returning to less for its drinks and desserts than for the nature that surrounds it.

Hanwoo bulgogi restaurant in Yangju: Manpo Garden vs Manpo Galbi

Manpo Garden (만포가든) is a galbi and hanwoo (Korean beef) butcher-shop restaurant on Godeok-ro in Yangju, Gyeonggi, and an upscale version of its sister restaurant Manpo Galbi. The meal at Manpo Garden was 2 servings of hanwoo flame-grilled bulgogi (₩28,000 per serving), chadol doenjang sulbap (brisket soybean-paste stew with rice, ₩8,000) and free mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth), with yukhoe (beef tartare) and yukjeon (pan-fried beef) as standard side dishes and free puffed-rice ice cream and coffee for dessert. Manpo Garden suits family gatherings well, but the ₩19,000-per-person lunch special galbi set is the better value.

Yangju Korean BBQ, a regular tries LA galbi and lettuce wraps: Manpo

Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch is a Korean BBQ galbi restaurant on Songnang-ro in Yangju, Gyeonggi. It is known for free naengmyeon (cold noodles) and generous side dishes such as yukjeon (pan-fried beef) and yukhoe (beef tartare). A regular who visits 1–2 times a month and usually orders the handmade galbi tried 2 servings of handmade LA galbi (250g, ₩28,000 per serving) for the first time, along with a brisket doenjang rice pot, and asked for lettuce wraps through the table tablet. Verdict: Manpo Galbi's LA galbi is tender and juicy, and 2 servings filled two people up.

Yangju dakgalbi with house-made makguksu and unlimited wraps: Seorak

Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yangju Branch is a newly opened charcoal dakgalbi (grilled marinated chicken) restaurant on Mansong-ro in Yangju, Gyeonggi, near Lakewood CC. We ordered one serving each of charcoal dakgalbi and soy sauce dakgalbi (16,000 won each), then added mul makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in broth) and bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles) for dessert (6,000 won each); the noodles are made in the kitchen, so they didn't break apart and had just the right texture. Side dishes and lettuce wraps are unlimited refills at the self-serve bar, so we went back for lettuce several times, which makes Seorak Makguksu a filling, good-value dakgalbi meal in Yangju.
