Daehak-ro play with Mom, 90 minutes of laughs: Aruto Small Theater

In short

Aruto Small Theater (아루또소극장) is a small theater on the 4th floor of the Yeongyeong Building on Daehak-ro 8ga-gil, near Hyehwa Station in Seoul, currently staging the play NEW Oh! My Ghost. The writer saw the 90-minute show with her mom on a weekend and says NEW Oh! My Ghost was funnier than a TV comedy show, adding a spooky twist and a moving final act that her mom thoroughly enjoyed. If you're looking for a play for a Daehak-ro outing with your mom, NEW Oh! My Ghost at Aruto Small Theater is a good choice.

Why I picked Oh! My Ghost for a Daehak-ro date with my mom

It was the weekend, and I wanted a date with my mom for the first time in a while, so I booked the Daehak-ro play Oh! My Ghost (오! 나의 귀신님) at Aruto Small Theater near Hyehwa Station. If you're looking for a good date spot around Hyehwa Station, pay attention 🙏

When I told my mom, "Let's go see Oh! My Ghost!", she recognized it right away: "Isn't that the drama? With Jo Jung-suk and Park Bo-young..." I hardly ever watch dramas, but even I remembered it the moment she said it, so it was clearly a popular one! Since it's based on the original story, I headed to Aruto Small Theater in Daehak-ro full of expectation that it would be fun. Let's get to the review 🙆🏻‍♀️

How do you get into Aruto Small Theater? Watch out for the stairs

At Aruto Small Theater, you check your reservation at the ticket booth before the show and get a paper wristband. I confirmed my booking at the booth, got the wristband, put it on my wrist myself, and I was ready to go in!

Stairs up to the 4th floor of the Yeongyeong Building where Aruto Small Theater is
Stairwell of the Aruto Small Theater building, which has no elevator

The theater is on the 4th floor of the Yeongyeong Building and there's no elevator, so you have to walk up. That's a downside, but I saw older visitors going up without any trouble, so the stairs didn't look too hard. If you're going with your mom, you probably don't need to worry too much.

The 4th-floor venue at Aruto Small Theater has a pretty photo zone and a space selling merchandise (MD) for Oh! My Ghost. Once I got upstairs, there was a photo zone, and small play-related goods were on sale, so it was fun to browse.

Is the 90-minute Oh! My Ghost fun?

Before watching the play Oh! My Ghost
Photo related to the Oh! My Ghost performance at Aruto Small Theater

Oh! My Ghost runs about 90 minutes, and it was so well packed that it felt really short. Photography isn't allowed during the show, so I couldn't bring back any photos of the interior or the stage. Those 90 minutes flew by!

From the moment it started, Oh! My Ghost was genuinely funnier than most comedy shows, and I was cracking up. Hearing my mom laugh out loud beside me, I thought, I'm so glad I brought her.

Given the ghost theme, there were eerie moments and sneaky jump scares here and there, so there wasn't a single dull second. After all the laughing and screaming, the second half adds a touching note too, so it's a three-in-one set of laughs, chills and tears.

Audience participation events: where should you sit?

Oh! My Ghost has moments that pull in the audience, with gifts for those who take part. If you're too shy to go up on stage, I'd suggest sitting a little toward the back.

The actors' performances and curtain call

After the play, the actors' curtain call was cheerful too, so we ended the night on a high. The male actor who mostly played the comic roles seemed so overflowing with talent that my mom and I chatted late about whether we'd be seeing him on the big screen soon.

If you're looking for a popular Daehak-ro play with laughs, emotion and little events, try Oh! My Ghost at Aruto Small Theater near Hyehwa Station. I'd recommend it as a play for a Daehak-ro date course too.
