My boyfriend and I have gotten really into escape rooms lately. Whenever I have free time I nag him into going haha. What kind of escape rooms do you neighbors like? I personally prefer ones with more devices than puzzles. And I also love ones with a solid story.

Hehe, this time I dragged my boyfriend — who now insists we should do harder ones since we're 'getting good' — back to Hongdae for another escape room. This is Cube Escape, an escape room in Hongdae.

Cube Escape is practically a fixture among Hongdae escape rooms — from what I know, it's been around for quite a while. It's located near the Hongdae street area, so it's great to visit for a meal and a fun activity or as a date course.

How hard is the Pyramid theme, and what is Cube Escape like inside?

The theme we chose at Cube Escape Hongdae Branch was Pyramid, with easy difficulty, 60 minutes, and a fear level of 0.5. Most of Cube Escape's themes in Hongdae seemed to be dark or mystery-thriller types. Maybe because of that, the interior of the store was kept a bit dim to match the theme's atmosphere.

We visited after booking through the website.

One extra hint from the QR code mission

If you sit down and wait a bit, staff explain everything. And if you complete a mission via this QR code, you get an extra hint. Try it even if you don't need the hint — it's fun. Explanations of the devices and numbers were also inside the QR code, which made things easy to figure out.

We put our things in a locker and got ready. The Pyramid theme we chose had us play as tomb raiders trying to escape a pyramid.

Can you play the Pyramid theme with a child?

We escaped the Pyramid theme at Cube Escape Hongdae successfully, using one hint and finishing with 15 minutes left. The overall ratio leaned toward devices, about 6 devices to 4 puzzles. I liked that there were no math problems at all. Kids could definitely enjoy the thrill of escaping too, as long as they make good use of hints.

There was one part in the middle where I went 'huh...?' — that was a part I just didn't understand, so I confidently used the hint and went 'ohh...'. Time flew by in a fun way haha lol. Escaping with 15 minutes left means it was pretty manageable overall, right? Haha

As always, once we finish an escape room we end up talking about it all day long, which I love haha. Since it was a Pyramid theme, the mystery element made it intriguing and fun, and since there was no scariness, I'd definitely recommend it to people who dislike horror too haha.

Is Cube Escape worth a return visit as a Hongdae activity?

Cube Escape Hongdae Branch was good enough that we'd happily come back to try other themes. My boyfriend even said, as we walked out, that he wanted to try another theme. The staff explained things well too, which was a plus.

If you're looking for something fun to do in Hongdae, an unusual date course, or you're new to escape rooms and unsure where to start, give Cube Escape a try 🥰

If you want to enjoy an escape room focused on devices rather than scares, try the Pyramid theme — easy difficulty, fear level 0.5.
