Half jeyuk, half suyuk barley rice in Danyang: Heukmaneul Boribap
In short
Heukmaneul Boribap is a barley rice set restaurant right at the entrance of Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, and the second branch of Heukmaneul Ssambap, serving just two dishes: jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) barley rice and suyuk (boiled pork) barley rice. Four friends arrived around 10:30am for a late breakfast and ordered two servings each, half and half, and got a full table of wraps, side dishes and a blue crab doenjang stew. The black garlic suyuk piled with garlic was the standout, and going in the morning is the easiest way to skip the lunchtime wait.

What is Heukmaneul Boribap, the restaurant at the Gugyeong Market entrance in Danyang?
Heukmaneul Boribap is the second branch of Heukmaneul Ssambap (black garlic wrapped rice), located right at the entrance of Gugyeong Market (구경시장) in Danyang, Chungbuk. Unlike the original, this branch specializes in barley rice set meals rather than wraps. Gugyeong Market is the heart of a Danyang trip, with sightseeing spots and downtown packed in from Danyang Station to the bus terminal, so it's a great stop before or after browsing the market.

Danyang is really easy to travel around since so many attractions and the downtown area are clustered between the station and the terminal, and Gugyeong Market sits right at the center of it all. It's in the middle of downtown Danyang and famous for garlic-related snacks too.

You need a full stomach before browsing a market, right? So while looking for good spots nearby, we ended up at Heukmaneul Boribap, a great Danyang restaurant recommendation for lunch near Gugyeong Market.

Parking and waiting at Heukmaneul Boribap: when should you go?
Parking at Heukmaneul Boribap fits about 2-3 cars in front of the restaurant, but on weekends it's an absolute mess haha, so we'd recommend using the nearby street parking lot instead of trying for a spot right out front.

We visited around 10:30-11am for a breakfast-lunch combo. Opening time is 10am, so even though it was quite early, the place was already about two-thirds full. We kept passing by afterward, and the wait got serious once lunch hour hit — so if you're planning a Danyang food trip to Heukmaneul Boribap, go for breakfast! Note that reservations aren't possible as far as we know.

The menu: jeyuk barley rice or suyuk barley rice
Heukmaneul Boribap only has two menu items: jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) barley rice and suyuk (boiled pork) barley rice. Anyone elementary school age or older must order their own dish, and jeyuk requires a minimum order of two servings. Since there were four of us, we ordered two servings of each!

Since it's a full-course set meal, the side dishes and barley rice came out quickly, and the suyuk and jeyuk followed soon after! From wraps to a full 8-dish spread, it really lived up to the 'set meal' name 👏👏

I thought that was it, but then a huge doenjang (soybean paste) stew came out too...? Of course a Korean meal needs a stew, but my jaw dropped at the table practically buckling under all that food 🤣

What comes with it: the wraps and side dishes
Starting with the wraps, we got a variety — perilla leaves, lettuce, kale, and even angelica leaves — plus five side dishes: quail eggs, pickled garlic, kimchi, and seasoned greens. Everything came in generous portions. Personally, the pickled garlic and stir-fried carrots were my favorite sides. 👍🏻

Jeyuk or suyuk: which one was better?
Both the jeyuk and suyuk come with black garlic sauce, but each version is different. The jeyuk leaned toward a sweeter style of stir-fried pork, and its black garlic sauce was also on the sweeter side with less spice. Since the jeyuk's own sauce flavor was strong, the black garlic sauce didn't stand out as much!

The suyuk came topped with a generous pile of garlic. Honestly, I didn't expect much since plenty of bossam places serve garlic bossam, but wow...? It was seriously good enough to put so-called garlic bossam specialty restaurants to shame! That garlic wasn't spicy, wasn't too sweet, and had this savory depth that kept me reaching for more ㅠㅠ❤

The suyuk itself was soft and delicious, but that garlic sauce was really the kicker haha. The bossam radish salad was also great! Between the two dishes, I personally recommend the black garlic suyuk the most! Honestly I'd say get 3 servings of suyuk and 1 of jeyuk, but since jeyuk requires a minimum of 2 servings, half-and-half it is 😂 Definitely a Danyang restaurant I'd recommend!

Blue crab doenjang stew and barley bibimbap
The doenjang stew is made with countryside-style soybean paste, giving it deep flavor without being too salty — it was really good. It had crab in it too, adding a strong refreshing taste that I loved!

The barley rice is tasty on its own, but mixing it with the seasoned greens, sesame oil, and gochujang (red pepper paste) turns it into barley bibimbap in no time. It was nice being able to enjoy two different styles of rice :)

Four women scraping the plates clean like this tells you how good it was, right? We got a discount, but this was a really filling and delicious breakfast — Heukmaneul Boribap is a Danyang restaurant I'd highly recommend!
