Mapo tofu rice bowl and free parking at Marine City Chinese: Bueokgan

I was looking for somewhere to eat with an ocean view in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan, and ended up at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch (부엌간 차이니즈 마린시티점), a Chinese restaurant there. The windows can be opened, so during the day you get the blue sea and Marine City skyline, and once the sun goes down you get a completely different night view — so depending on the time of day you can enjoy the open, breezy Marine City atmosphere along with the sea view while you eat.

What are the sea-view window seats like?

Walking in, the first thing that catches your eye is the view of the Haeundae sea through the big windows. The weather's been nice lately so the windows were open, which gave it an open, unstuffy feeling. The night view is really pretty in the evening, but the interior lighting does tend to attract bugs then, haha. Visiting at lunchtime would give you a much brighter, cleaner atmosphere to enjoy!

There's a sink near the entrance just for washing your hands, so it was convenient not having to go all the way to the restroom.

What's on the menu at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City?

We ordered three dishes that day: black vinegar tenderloin tangsuyuk (small, ₩28,000), pork belly mapo tofu rice bowl (₩12,000), and stir-fried bok choy with garlic (₩15,000).

The garlic bok choy stir-fry was a relatively simple dish — less of a showy Chinese-restaurant number and more like something you'd stir-fry at home, in a familiar way. It had a basic style: the crunchy texture of the bok choy plus fragrant shiitake mushrooms, all tied together with the garlic aroma.

It was a good dish to pick at in between bites when eating several dishes together.

Black vinegar tenderloin tangsuyuk (small), 28,000 won

The most impressive dish was the black vinegar tenderloin sweet and sour pork. Made with tenderloin, the meat itself had good texture, and the crispy batter was topped with the tangy flavor unique to black vinegar, plus a generous pile of crunchy onions that cut right through any greasiness.

Whenever I go for Chinese food, tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) is a must-order for me. The balance between the batter's texture and the sauce was great, making this personally the most satisfying dish of the meal.

Pork belly mapo tofu rice bowl, 12,000 won

This dish adds pork belly to mapo tofu (spicy tofu), giving it a slightly heavier, nuttier flavor than a regular mapo tofu rice bowl. The sauce style here leaned less toward punchy Chinese-restaurant flavor and more toward the familiar taste of home cooking.

If you're expecting the usual mapo tofu flavor, it might feel a bit different — instead of the strong aroma or deep richness typical of mapo tofu, it's mild and familiar in style, so kids could probably eat it without any issue.
