Seoul Korean BBQ at Balsan Station: hangover naengmyeon, Ihwajeong

In short

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch (이화정갈비명가 마곡발산점) is a large pork galbi restaurant with a hotel hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) feel near Exit 4 of Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. On a weekend afternoon, a couple paid 63,000 won for 2 servings (300g each) of seasoned pork neck galbi, plus mul naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon and rice. They liked the less-sweet marinade made with organic pear juice, the neat side dishes and the hangover-soothing naengmyeon broth. For a meal with parents, a family gathering or a Magok Korean BBQ with easy parking, Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch is a good choice.

There's a big Magok BBQ place I kept thinking about long after my visit, and I really want to share it rather than keep it to myself! From the interior to the food, everything felt upscale, like a hotel hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) – it's Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch (이화정갈비명가 마곡발산점), a pork galbi spot near Balsan Station. Hours and parking info are at the very bottom, so read to the end if you can! ^^

What we ordered at Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch, and what it cost

My husband and I visited on a weekend afternoon and paid ₩63,000 in total for 2 servings of seasoned pork neck galbi, plus mul naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon and rice. Here's the breakdown.

  • Seasoned pork neck galbi (300g), for 2: ₩46,000
  • Mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth): ₩8,000
  • Bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles): ₩8,000
  • 1 bowl of rice: ₩1,000
  • Total: ₩63,000

Table setting for 2 servings of seasoned pork neck galbi

When our 2 servings of pork galbi arrived, the owner poured some mysterious sauce over the meat. I was curious and asked, and it was organic pear juice.

Why this Balsan Station galbi stands out: the organic pear-juice marinade

They told us the pork galbi here gets its natural sweetness only from organic pears, not artificial sugar, which gives a healthy depth of flavor! I've been paying attention to blood sugar lately, so I was glad to hear it and curious how it would taste.

The scored pork galbi is boneless and a full 300g, so it looked like more than I expected. Considering the space and the table setup, ₩23,000 for 300g felt like a fair price.

Side dishes worthy of a hotel hanjeongsik

Every side dish here was neat and refined, hotel-hanjeongsik level. The sides really won me over, I'm telling you. If you bring parents or family to Magok for a gathering, they'll surely appreciate how it looks and tastes.

Potato salad

You all know by now that eating a fresh salad before a meal helps prevent blood sugar spikes, right? The potato salad is so pretty. ^^ The plating alone had that hotel hanjeongsik vibe. It's mild and very soft.

Tangpyeongchae and minari salad

The tangpyeongchae (mung bean jelly salad) had such a nutty sesame oil aroma ^^ I could have refilled it 10 times. And this minari (water dropwort) salad was so good that I want to try recreating it at home. It's slightly bitter and refreshing, a perfect match for the meat.

Pickled burdock and garlic stems, and white kimchi

I loved the burdock and garlic stem pickles in their sweet-sour soy sauce too ♡ The white kimchi (baek-kimchi) tastes clean with nothing extra. I couldn't skip a single one, they were all delicious.

There's a kiosk at the table where you can order side dish refills and grill changes, which makes the meal comfortable!

How was the seasoned pork neck galbi?

The seasoned pork neck galbi isn't very sweet and has a charcoal aroma. It's aged for 144 hours, so it was thick yet tender. While we tasted the sides one by one and waited, the owner kept coming over to look after the sizzling galbi.

Once cooked, the galbi was cut along the grain and arranged nicely on a plate. Golden-brown and generous, it looked incredibly appetizing. My stomach was growling ^^

All the sides go well with the galbi, so mixing different combinations is fun. Everything was good, but I especially recommend the minari salad!

Pork galbi marinade is often too sweet and salty, but this Balsan Station galbi place was clearly not very sweet and had a charcoal aroma, which I liked. Aged for 144 hours, it's thick yet very tender. I think the meat was well tenderized. Mild sweet-and-salty balance!

They said pork galbi takeout is buy 2 get 1 free, so I'm planning to buy some as a gift later. (No gift wrapping, though.)

I also liked seeing the staff check between courses whether the table needed anything. I felt well looked after throughout the meal~♡

Hangover-friendly mul naengmyeon and spicy-sweet bibim naengmyeon

The mul naengmyeon (₩8,000) has a wonderfully clean broth. My husband had a few drinks the night before, on Friday, and he said it cured his hangover as he gulped down the broth. haha

Mul naengmyeon with a clean broth

You can taste the natural sweetness of pear in the naengmyeon broth too. It's a different league from store-bought naengmyeon broth! Clean and tasty.

The thin, springy noodles slurp down easily too. So chewy!

I usually love bibim naengmyeon, and I enjoyed the subtle spicy-sweet savoriness of this one (₩8,000).

It isn't very spicy and the sauce isn't overpowering, so I think older folks and parents could eat it comfortably with the meat.

Dessert: pear sorbet

Atmosphere and rooms at Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch

The front entrance has a Korean tiled-roof design that made a good first impression. It feels like arriving at a fancy hanjeongsik restaurant.

Step inside and the space is huge and modern. It opened around April this year, so it's very clean. Plants under soft lighting and Asian-style ceramics give off a tidy, calm mood.

As a big Magok BBQ restaurant, it has open-style rooms divided by hallways in a large layout. It doesn't feel crowded at all.

There are large rooms, so it's ideal for company dinners and group gatherings. For the quality, the price felt like good value, and I really liked this place in many ways.

Who I'd recommend it to

  • People looking for a place to treat their parents
  • People who like a hotel hanjeongsik-style spread
  • People who need a Magok spot for a family gathering or a private-room restaurant
