Suwon dessert café for mom and daughter: real peach, Grid in Greek

Grid in Greek is a Greek yogurt and sandwich café in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, right in front of Banghwasuryujeong. After walking Hwaseong Haenggung, having pizza for lunch and passing the mural village, a mother and daughter ordered Grid in Greek's summer seasonal Summer Peach & Greek (₩10,900), a pitted peach filled with Greek yogurt, plus an Americano and a Jeju matcha latte. The Summer Peach & Greek looks almost too pretty to be real, but it is a real peach, making Grid in Greek a lovely Haenggung-dong dessert stop for mothers and daughters.

Haenggung-dong, Suwon pizzeria with saffron arancini: The European

The European Haenggung Main Branch is a Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizza restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, right in front of the Hwaseong Haenggung public street parking lot. Before an outing to Hwaseong Haenggung, the writer and her daughter in her twenties had lunch there: arugula jamón burrata pizza (31,000 won), so moist with oozing burrata that they rolled slices up like sandwiches, and saffron mortadella arancini (22,000 won), turned golden by saffron and a new experience for them. For wood-fired pizza alongside less common Italian dishes in Haenggung-dong, The European Haenggung Main Branch is worth recommending.

Flowerpot Cafe Gojan Branch is a bakery café on Gwangdeok 2-ro in Gojan-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan, on the site that used to be Milhwadang. On a Friday around 7:30 pm, the writer and her daughter had an orange cream latte (₩6,600), a decaf Americano and orange marmalade bread (₩8,000). Thanks to the high ceilings and outlets at almost every seat, she also got laptop work done, then took home a fig cream bar (₩5,800) and a white roll (₩5,300). Flowerpot Cafe is a spacious, comfortable spot in Gojan-dong for studying or working over bread and coffee.

Gangwon-style noodle house in Ansan for an after-work meal: Memilchon

Memilchon Ansan (메밀촌 안산점) is a buckwheat makguksu and ongsimi (potato dumpling) restaurant on Songho 1-gil in Sangnok-gu, Ansan, near Handaeap Station. After work, the writer, who lived in Gangwon Province for years, ate bibim makguksu (spicy buckwheat noodles), a small suyuk (boiled pork) and a hand-grated potato pancake at Memilchon Ansan and found the Gangwon flavors they remembered. Memilchon Ansan is worth a visit for anyone missing Gangwon-style makguksu and potato pancake that let the ingredients speak for themselves.
