Unjeong, Paju bakery: baguette eaten on a walk, Boulangerie Tan

Boulangerie Tan Unjeong Main Branch is a takeout bakery on the first floor of Farm Tower in Unjeong, Paju, known for its sandwiches, baguettes and cornet pies. Drawn in by the smell of bread during a weekday stroll around 2pm, the writer bought a baguette, a chocolate baguette, a jambon fromage sandwich and a vanilla cornet pie, and ate the baguette while walking home. From the crisp-outside, chewy-inside baguette to the jambon fromage meant to be half-eaten but finished entirely, Boulangerie Tan is a bakery where the bread itself is delicious.

Staff-grilled Korean BBQ in Paju Unjeong: bibim naengmyeon, Tannae

Tannae Paju Main Branch (탄내 파주본점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Garam-maeul, Unjeong, Paju, where the meat is pre-grilled over coal briquettes. Two diners ordered 2 servings of pork neck and 1 serving of marinated pork. Because Tannae pre-grills the meat separately and brings it to the table, conversation was easy, and both the free crab doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and the receipt-review bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles) were refreshing and clean-tasting. Tannae Paju Main Branch grills the meat for you yet keeps prices low, making it a satisfying pick for a family dinner or a company outing.

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (부벽정평양만두) is a Korean restaurant specializing in Pyeongyang-style dumplings on Jimok-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi, near Lotte Outlets. The writer loved Bubyeokjeong so much they returned on a weekday evening, got a table with no wait, and ordered the spicy Pyeongyang mandu hot pot for 2 and a half plate of beef shank suyuk (boiled sliced beef). Service, atmosphere, parking, taste and price were all excellent, making Bubyeokjeong the writer's first recommendation in Paju for a meal with parents.

Paju Simhaksan Chinese restaurant: mild jjamppong & mala dumplings

Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch is a Chinese restaurant specializing in stone-plate jjamppong (spicy seafood noodles) and jjajang (black bean noodles), which opened in late June on the Simhaksan restaurant street in Paju, Gyeonggi. On a Friday just after the opening, the writer ordered a medium mild (Shin Ramyun-level) nurungji stone jjamppong with a dontang-chitang (sweet-and-sour pork and chicken) set and mala dumplings. The jjamppong was sweet and spicy, somewhere between stir-fried and soup jjamppong, and the chitang was soft and chewy. With a self-serve bar that includes unlimited rice and partitioned seating, Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch is worth a return visit for a family gathering.

Boulangerie Tan at Hyundai Department Store KINTEX is a bakery on the B1 floor of the department store in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, and a branch of the original shop in Unjeong's Chorongkkot Village. The writer, already a fan of the Unjeong bakery, stopped by on a KINTEX errand, used the 30 minutes of free parking, and took home a carrot râpée chicken salt bread sandwich, garlic butter salt bread, a baguette and a pistachio cornet pie. The nutty, moist salt bread made Boulangerie Tan the writer's favorite bakery.

Seoul Korean BBQ in Jongno 3-ga: 200-min estimate, 55-min wait, Tapgol

Tapgol Gongwon Jongno 3-ga Branch is an outdoor frozen pork belly BBQ restaurant across from the east gate of Tapgol Park in Jongno 3-ga, Seoul. The writer arrived just before the weekend opening and joined the waitlist on the on-site tablet; the estimated wait climbed to 200 minutes, but the real wait was 55 minutes, followed by naengsam (frozen pork belly), naengmoksal (frozen pork neck) and brisket doenjang stew. The charm of the stone-wall lane and the self-serve bar's bracken fern made Tapgol Gongwon Jongno 3-ga Branch especially satisfying.
