Windshield oil-film remover test: AutoGrooming Clean View

In short

AutoGrooming Clean View is a car-glass oil-film remover used to clean a windshield. After about five passes with the included towel, water spread more evenly and the glass looked a little clearer from inside the car. Verdict: a straightforward windshield-cleaning step before water-repellent coating.

Why did I decide to remove the oil film from my windshield?

While driving on rainy days, I noticed that water droplets were not flowing evenly across the windshield and were beading up here and there. At night, the headlights from oncoming cars also seemed to blur across the glass, so I thought it was time to remove the oil film.

Oil film is the greasy layer that sticks to car glass as dust, exhaust fumes, oily residue, car-wash wax, and other buildup accumulate. This time, I tried caring for my windshield with AutoGrooming Clean View oil-film remover.

What is included, and where can it be used?

The package included the Clean View oil-film remover itself and a dedicated work towel. I liked not having to buy a separate pad or towel for the rubbing step.

One bottle is said to last for about three to four or more uses on car glass, and it can be used on side windows and the rear window as well as the windshield.

I also liked the explanation that it was designed to avoid the whitening that can occur when it gets on rubber molding.

What did I do before spraying the oil-film remover?

First, I thoroughly removed the dust and debris left on the glass. Rubbing while dust is still stuck on can cause fine scratches, so I sprayed on plenty of water.

At a car wash, I rinsed with high-pressure water; at home or outdoors, the method is to wipe first with a towel thoroughly soaked in water.

After shaking the bottle well, I sprayed the solution evenly over the glass surface while it was still damp. The towel moved a little more smoothly on damp glass than on completely dry glass.

How did I rub and rinse it with the dedicated towel?

After spraying the solution, I rubbed the entire windshield evenly with the included dedicated towel.

Rather than pressing hard on one spot, I rubbed in circles, as though wiping a broad area several times. I repeated this about five times over the full windshield. As I worked, the water seemed to cling broadly to the glass surface rather than gathering into round beads.

Once I had finished rubbing, I thoroughly rinsed away the remaining solution with clean water. At a car wash, I washed it off with high-pressure water; where it was difficult to spray water directly, I wiped it away several times with a towel thoroughly soaked in clean water. It was important to finish carefully so that no solution remained.

How did the windshield look before and after?

Before the work, spraying water made round droplets form all over the glass. After rinsing, the water spread more evenly across the surface instead of gathering in one place, and the windshield looked clearer than before.

Looking through the windshield from inside the car, it also felt a little clearer and more transparent than before. If you plan to apply a water-repellent coating, the order is to remove the oil film first, clean up the glass surface, and then apply the coating.
