If you're looking for a good beef restaurant near Mapo Station where you can pair tasty beef with a glass of soju, pay attention! Today's stop is Mapo Mokjang (마포목장) in Dohwa-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul.

Mapo Mokjang is about a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Mapo Station, so it's easy to reach, and it specializes in Black Angus emperor beef ribs grilled over charcoal. This time I ordered 450g of the ribs with a bowl of rice and a bottle of soju, and had a hearty meal. Savory beefy aroma, rich juiciness, a cozy atmosphere, and a dessert at the end! I'll walk you through it from start to finish. 😊
Where is Mapo Mokjang and what's the atmosphere like?
Mapo Mokjang sits on the eatery street near Mapo Station.

Even from the outside, the place had that homey, old-school Korean BBQ feel. The wooden door and window frames, the warm lighting, and the red tables and chairs out front caught my eye. Rather than a flashy trendy interior, it felt like a comfortable spot to sit, grill meat and chat.

Inside, it felt cozy overall. There's a charcoal brazier in the middle of each table with an exhaust hood above to pull away the smoke. It suits a soju after work with colleagues or a relaxed dinner with friends.

What's on the menu at Mapo Mokjang and how much does it cost?
The signature dish at Mapo Mokjang is Black Angus emperor beef ribs.

You can choose the ribs unmarinated or marinated, and there's also a set that comes with Korean beef tartare (hanwoo yukhoe).

Today's order
- Emperor beef ribs 450g ₩50,000
- Rice ₩1,000
- Soju ₩5,000
What are the side dishes and kimchi stew like?
Before the meat arrived, the staff filled the table with side dishes.

There were wrap vegetables like lettuce, perilla leaves and chili peppers, plus spring onion salad (pajeori), bean sprouts, pickled onions, ssamjang (dipping paste), salt, a salad, pickles (jangajji), garlic and sesame oil. You can just dip the meat in salt, wrap it in vegetables, or pair it with the spring onion salad, whichever you like.

Kimchi stew came out too, which made it even more filling. Eat some meat, take a spoonful of warm kimchi stew, add a sip of soju, and ahh~ isn't that the little happiness of a Korean BBQ place? 😆 With the stew, the table was great for drinking snacks. So I ordered soju, haha.

How was the 450g Black Angus emperor beef ribs?
The star of the day: 450g of Black Angus emperor beef ribs! The red beef came generously piled on a big black plate. I noticed the marbling, with white fat running through the meat. Seeing the ribs cut to a decent thickness, I couldn't wait to get them onto the charcoal.

The red charcoal in the middle of the table glowed softly. As the meat cooks on the grill, a delicious spread comes together.

What I liked most at Mapo Mokjang was the taste of the meat itself. At the first bite, the beefy aroma was good and I could feel the juices as I chewed. The meat was tender, and above all it was tasty enough with just a light dip in salt. Part of the charm of beef is enjoying its natural flavor without complicated seasoning.

The ribs at Mapo Mokjang had an aroma and juiciness that got more savory and delicious the more I chewed. Personally, I like to dip it lightly in salt and eat it with rice, and it's delicious.

Enjoying it with spring onion salad, pickled onions and wraps
After enjoying the plain flavor of the meat, I tried it with the spring onion salad and pickled onions. The crunch of the spring onion salad and the pickled onions with the beef made another nice combination. Putting a piece of meat on lettuce or a perilla leaf and adding garlic and ssamjang is also a joy you can't skip at a Korean BBQ place. With so many wrap vegetables and side dishes, I could eat it however I liked right to the end.

The emperor ribs were also just right with a glass of soju.
What dessert does Mapo Mokjang serve?
At a Korean BBQ place, the taste of the meat matters, but the side dishes and meal items served with it also decide how satisfied you are. The warm kimchi stew went well with the charcoal-grilled beef, and with a bowl of rice it was a filling meal. And near the end of the meal, they brought out a dessert!

It was a cool, patbingsu-style (red bean shaved ice) dessert. 🍧 Finishing with cold shaved ice felt great. Getting a bingsu-style dessert is what stuck with me.

I was able to finish the meal on a happy note.

Who is Mapo Mokjang recommended for?
I'd recommend Mapo Mokjang to people who love the natural flavor of beef. The Black Angus emperor ribs I had had a good beefy aroma and juiciness, and the tender texture left an impression. It was a nice place to enjoy charcoal-grilled meat and soju in a cozy, comfortable atmosphere, and the kimchi stew and bingsu-style dessert made it even more satisfying.
I hope this helps anyone looking for a place near Mapo Station for a beef team dinner or gathering, or anyone in Dohwa-dong who wants charcoal-grilled meat and a drink. If you're searching for Korean BBQ in Mapo, keep Mapo Mokjang's emperor ribs in mind!
