Korean dinner with a friend near Gwanghwamun: octopus, Bonghyejane

In short

Bonghyejane Jubang Jongno Tower branch (봉혜자네주방 종로타워점) is a Korean restaurant in the B2 food court of Jongno Tower, right in front of Jonggak Station in Jongno, Seoul. After meeting up in Gwanghwamun, two friends shared the octopus stir-fry set (₩16,000, ordered less spicy) and the spicy seafood sundubu (soft tofu stew, ₩13,500), with perilla soup, sweet pumpkin, white kimchi and seasoned seaweed on the side, and finished every bowl. Bonghyejane Jubang is a good fit for Gwanghwamun and Jonggak office workers who want a generous Korean set meal with adjustable spice.

Where is Bonghyejane Jubang Jongno Tower branch?

Bonghyejane Jubang Jongno Tower branch (봉혜자네주방 종로타워점) is in the B2 food court of Jongno Tower, right in front of Jonggak Station. I was in Gwanghwamun to meet a friend and heard it had just opened, so I stopped by. Jongno Tower is insanely easy to get to. You don't even have to go outside, since it connects to the subway station!!

This is the building! You just cross at the traffic light.

Go into Jongno Tower and head down to the B2 food court. There's so much food gathered in one place, right?? Gwanghwamun really is great,,

And apparently Hibab and Jung Jun-ha have been here..? With those two, you can trust it, right??!!! Total Jonggak lunch-spot vibes.

What is the atmosphere like at Bonghyejane?

The restaurant was bigger than I expected and clean, so I think it's great for office workers!!!

Don't forget the review event before ordering

Wait, before you order! Definitely join the Bonghyejane review event,, haha. You get one free bottle of alcohol or a drink! We ordered two dishes, and here they are~~

Table set with the two ordered dishes

How big and how spicy is the octopus stir-fry set (₩16,000)?

The first dish is the octopus stir-fry set (nakji-bokkeum jeongsik, ₩16,000). It's a single serving, but the portion is so huge that two people could share it, and look at that presentation.. Oh, and you can adjust the spice level, but it's sneakily hot, so if you can't handle spice, pick the non-spicy option.. I ordered mild!

Bonghyejane's special point!! They give you this perilla soup (deulkkae-tang), and it's really rare to find a place that does. It's hot and nutty and so good T_T It kind of neutralizes the spiciness..

See how plump the octopus is..? And it's packed with cabbage too!! The kind of octopus you'd describe as juicy, haha.

Just mix it all up with the rice that comes with it.

Even looking at it again, my mouth waters..><

The sauce isn't salty at all and it's just delicious!!! And I really love this kind of thing. I finished my bowl all by myself that day, hahaha.

Rice mixed with a generous helping of octopus stir-fry

Even after mixing in this much, there was octopus left over, so I shared it with my friend!!! It's seriously a bargain, a total hyejanne (great value).

Sweet pumpkin, white kimchi and perilla soup on the side

The sweet pumpkin that came as an appetizer was sweet and got my appetite going!! And that white kimchi that came with it is the kicker..

The perilla soup even has cute little jorangi tteok (small rice cake pieces) in it><

How spicy is the spicy seafood sundubu (₩13,500)?

Next is the spicy seafood sundubu (eolkeun haemul sundubu, ₩13,500) my friend ordered! But guys.. it has "eolkeun" (spicy) in the name, and it really was spicy.. Maybe because it's boiling hot too, so be careful,,,

Loads of soft tofu with egg and mushrooms.. And sundubu is something I love, hahahaha. I basically ate all my favorite things that day, haha.

I saw other people ordering hamburg steak or pork cutlet too, but I think sharing something like the octopus stir-fry set and the seafood sundubu makes an even better combo!!

Even if it's spicy, keep eating,,

The white kimchi wipes out the spiciness, so the rice just keeps going down..

They even give you extra seaweed, and I wrapped my rice in it nicely~~ Seaweed is a golden rule, a side dish everyone loves, right??

Is Bonghyejane Jongno Tower branch good for Gwanghwamun office workers?

See how I cleaned out the jjukkumi (small octopus), the perilla soup and the pumpkin..? Proof that it was that good!!! It was dinnertime and lots of Gwanghwamun office workers were coming in to eat??!!! I wish there were a place like this near my work.. So jealous of you Gwanghwamun workers T_T
