Dongtan day-trip dinner buffet, soybean chicken broth: Pyeonbaek

In short

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch is a cypress-steam and shabu-shabu all-you-can-eat course buffet on the 2nd floor of Grandbiastar by Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. A family of four on a day trip to Dongtan came for dinner and ate comfortably thanks to the kids room, the wide hall and the many baby chairs, choosing the bonito-mushroom and soybean-paste chicken broths for a shabu-shabu that was not spicy. For anyone dining with small children, the kids room and the open space are the strongest reasons to pick Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch.

Kids room and wide hall: why it works with small children

Here's why we picked Pyeonbaek Hoegwan out of all the Dongtan Station restaurants: the kids room. Whenever a restaurant has a kids room, our child gets so happy. She played a little before eating and a little after — perfect!

Second reason: the spacious interior. Our second child has been shrieking lately, loud enough to startle other customers in cramped restaurants, so we've been searching for the roomiest places possible to let the sound spread out a bit! Pyeonbaek Hoegwan was spacious, and plenty of other families with young kids like us were there too.

The 12 medicinal herbs displayed at the entrance

At this Dongtan Station restaurant, you can enjoy an unlimited course of cypress steam (편백찜), steamed healthily with 12 kinds of medicinal herbs, alongside shabu-shabu with various broths! The 12 herbs were on display right by the entrance, and the subtle herbal scent throughout the restaurant was really nice!

All the vegetables for the rice-paper wraps to go with the cypress steam, and the vegetables for the shabu-shabu, were unlimited at the self-serve bar! There were also fries, jjolmyeon (chewy noodles), salad, and mukguksu (acorn jelly noodle soup).

How the course works and the 100-minute rule

To properly enjoy Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch, we first checked the instructions printed on the table. For the cypress steam, you prep rice-paper wrap vegetables, rice paper, hot water, and chili/peanut/ponzu sauces. For the shabu-shabu, you prep the shabu meat, vegetables, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and more!

At the end, you can even make an egg-vegetable porridge! And if you leave a receipt review, they give you one free drink!

Cypress steam set up on the table

Cypress steam first, 10 minutes to set up the rice-paper wraps

The cypress steam gets set up first. It needs about 10 minutes to cook, so we used that time to prep the rice-paper wrap ingredients. There was so much meat in the cypress steam! Enough that we worried we wouldn't have room left for the shabu-shabu if we finished it all.

I just grabbed the ingredients as labeled on the bowl, but my wife said these days you're supposed to toss in all the vegetables and sauce together and mix it up.

Bonito-mushroom and soybean-paste chicken: two non-spicy broths

We grabbed the side dishes from the self-serve bar too, and once we'd worked through some of the cypress steam, we ordered the shabu-shabu. You can pick 2 out of bonito-mushroom, spicy mushroom, soybean paste chicken, bone-broth tomato, and bone-broth mala broths — since we were eating with our kid, we went with the two non-spicy ones: bonito-mushroom and soybean paste chicken.

Simmering shabu-shabu with vegetables and meat added

We added the shabu-shabu vegetables and meat and let it all simmer! We were too full to make it to the porridge finish, so our meal wrapped up with the cypress steam and shabu-shabu.

Misugaru drink enjoyed on the way out

On the way out, we even grabbed a misugaru (roasted grain drink) to sip!

Final verdict on Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch

Today we visited Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch, a Dongtan Station restaurant with a spacious interior and a kids room, and had a healthy, filling meal from the all-you-can-eat cypress steam and shabu-shabu course that the whole family, kids included, could enjoy together!
