Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant Hwangnam Main Branch is a hanok Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju that specialises in aged kimchi braised pork back ribs and has outdoor seats where dogs are welcome. On a Wednesday visit at 2pm, the writer ordered the aged kimchi rib stew, gondre rice (rice with Korean thistle) and steamed egg, and received a buckwheat pancake free for ordering one rib dish per person. The stew is not spicy, so even a spice-shy friend enjoyed it, making Hwangnam Dukkebi an especially handy stop for anyone travelling Gyeongju with a dog.

Gyeongju café open until 10pm on Hwangnidang-gil: Bonghwangdang

Cafe Bonghwangdang is a tomb-view café at the entrance of Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, directly across from the Daereungwon Tomb Complex. Cafe Bonghwangdang opens at 8:30am on weekdays and weekends alike and stays open until 10pm, which is rare on Hwangnidang-gil, and every seat along the floor-to-ceiling windows on the 1st and 2nd floors looks out on the tombs. Go early for photos, and pick up the sumakse (roof-end tile) cookie set as a gift on the way out.
