This Hwangnidan-gil restaurant is famous for its signature aged kimchi stew, and it's one of the rare Gyeongju restaurants where you can bring your dog!! If you're traveling Gyeongju with a pup, save this one right now! There are so few places you can go with a dog, right? As a dog owner, I feel this so hard...

⬇️Overall review⬇️ From other reviews, I heard there's a wait on weekends so they recommend reserving ahead, but luckily we went on a weekday and got seated right away! Since it's such a popular Hwangnidan-gil restaurant, I'd still recommend booking on Naver ahead of time. The aged kimchi stew here isn't spicy, so it seems great to bring foreign friends along too! It's a Hwangnidan-gil Korean restaurant that both Koreans and foreigners can enjoy, so it's worth saving!

Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant, a Hwangnidan-gil restaurant in Gyeongju! First of all, it's a hanok (traditional Korean house), so instant pass haha. If you're in Gyeongju, it has to be a hanok haha. Actually Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant is already a super famous place.

It's famous for its signature aged kimchi braised ribs, so there's usually a wait on weekends at this popular Hwangnidan-gil spot. We went on a weekday so we got seated right away, but it was already full when we arrived... wow haha.

As you'd expect from a hot spot, there's a separate waiting area like this. And it's so spacious too haha. Everyone, please book ahead on Naver.

The vibe of the outdoor seating is amazing. If it hadn't been so hot, we would have sat outside too. I think if we'd brought our dog, this is probably where we'd have eaten. Thanks to the mother-of-pearl tables and decor, the atmosphere is great, and it somehow feels like visiting grandma's house.

Wow, we visited on a Wednesday... and even at 2pm on a Wednesday it was already full. If we'd been a little later we would have had to wait, so lucky us haha. Why is it so popular??

Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant with its gorgeous hanok rafters. The interior is cozy and warm, making it comfortable to eat in, and they have high chairs plus super friendly staff.

The signature menu was the aged kimchi braised ribs! And there was even a cute Cheomseongdae (Gyeongju's ancient observatory) themed set haha, so fun. There were plenty of other items too like yukhoe (raw beef) bibimbap and kkomak (cockle) bibimbap. In particular, side dishes like corn pancake, gondre rice, fried egg rice, steamed egg, and tteokgalbi (short rib patties) were varied and reasonably priced, which was really appealing. We ordered the aged kimchi braised ribs, gondre rice, and steamed egg!

Stir-fried kimchi, stir-fried fish cake, and braised beef in soy sauce! I was surprised that all the side dishes were ones I love haha. They cleverly prepared only crowd-pleasing, universally loved sides haha.

Free buckwheat pancake with one rib dish per person

This is the best part. If you order one rib dish per person, you get this buckwheat pancake for free. But is it okay for a free item to be this good quality? They even added scallions haha.

Aged kimchi braised pork back ribs, steamed egg and gondre rice

The food came out really fast, which was great. A hearty portion of aged kimchi braised ribs! It simmers away right next to you and you just eat it as it bubbles.

Wow, the steamed egg was truly great. They put cheese on top too, making it even nuttier, and it was fluffy and light — pairing insanely well with the kimchi rib stew.

I was torn between ordering fried egg rice or gondre rice, but went with gondre rice since it had been a while haha. The fragrant gondre (dried thistle greens) aroma filled the bowl — honestly it would have been tasty even just mixed with soy sauce.

They cut the kimchi for us before it started boiling! The aged kimchi stew at Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant, a Hwangnidan-gil restaurant, was great first of all because it's not spicy, making it a Korean restaurant that's great to visit with both Korean and foreign friends!

The ribs were loaded in generously, so it felt very filling. It was plentiful enough that two servings would be enough for a group. The broth was really rich and the kimchi was delicious too haha. What Korean wouldn't love this.

Ate the glass noodles, ate the rice cake add-in, picked at the ribs, put kimchi on rice, ate the steamed egg too haha. Eating all these different things, I felt like I was going to burst haha. We really ate so well!!

Portions so big we skipped dinner in Gyeongju

My friend overate that day and said she didn't need dinner... so in the end we both skipped dinner... haha why did you suddenly overeat haha. My friend is sensitive to spice, but since this wasn't spicy and had a nice sweet-savory balance, she said it was perfect for her taste and saved it immediately. Recommended for anyone traveling Gyeongju with a dog, or looking for a Hwangnidan-gil restaurant, a Hwangnidan-gil Korean restaurant, or a Hwangnidan-gil hanok restaurant!
