Texas BBQ at opening time by Dongdaegu Station: brisket first, Modak

In short

Modak Texas Barbecue Dongdaegu Branch is an American-style Texas barbecue restaurant near Exit 2 of Dongdaegu Station in Dong-gu, Daegu. The writer arrived right at opening time, ordered the Texas Platter for two (57,000 won) and the shrimp rosé ravioli pasta (16,000 won), and started with the brisket as the staff recommended. With its roomy, softly lit dining room and generous portions, Modak Texas Barbecue Dongdaegu Branch is worth a return visit for a date, a group meal or dining solo.

Today's restaurant is a Dongdaegu Station favorite, Modak Texas Barbecue. Modak has two branches in Daegu, Palgongsan and Dongdaegu, and I visited the Dongdaegu branch. The mood is great and the food is delicious, so I'd highly recommend it as a Daegu date spot. Here's my detailed review of the meal I enjoyed. Let's go!

What is the atmosphere like at Modak Texas Barbecue Dongdaegu Branch?

The restaurant is very spacious and the soft lighting makes it a lovely place for a date. We went right at opening (an open-run, as Koreans call it), and a couple who had arrived before us was already eating. The lights were dim, gentle music was playing, and the mood was great.

Because it's so easy to reach, it's also popular in Daegu for wedding invitation get-togethers and company dinners, and the big space is just right for group gatherings.

Menu, lunch specials and solo dining at Modak

You order by kiosk, which can be switched between Korean and English, and I hear many foreign guests come here. Besides barbecue and steak, the menu was varied: pasta, samgyeopsal (pork belly), assorted grilled dishes and stews. There are upscale items like the full tomahawk steak set, so it's also a fit for anyone looking for an anniversary restaurant or date course in Daegu.

You can order à la carte, but there are also good-value barbecue sets. On top of that, the lunch special pasta for one is only ₩10,000–12,000, which is a steal! And don't worry about eating alone being awkward. While I was eating, I saw quite a few solo diners.

We ordered the Texas Platter for two + the shrimp rosé ravioli pasta.

What is served before your order arrives?

At Modak Texas Barbecue, nachos and a tomato-stew-based dish came out as the complimentary starter. It had carrots, potatoes and more in it, and it's really good.

Before our food arrived, the next table ordered a steak and there was a fire show, so I filmed it. A feast for the eyes and the mouth, definitely a Dongdaegu Station must-eat, right?

What comes in the Texas Platter for two (57,000 won)?

Modak Texas Barbecue's Texas Platter for two is ₩57,000, with 150g of brisket, 3 pieces of wings and 130g of pulled pork. Our food also came out within 10 minutes.

Why the staff say to eat the brisket first

A staff member explained the dishes to us and told us to eat the brisket, the Western-style beef cut, first. It was moist and tender, and it cut easily with a knife.

They say the restaurant goes through about 2 tons of meat a month, and that number alone tells you how many people love this Dongdaegu Station restaurant, right?

The Texas Platter for two comes with sauces and sides. From the left, there are 3 sauces: soy-based, mustard-based and ketchup-based. Then there's pickle relish (ground-up pickles), pico de gallo (tomato salsa) and coleslaw.

  • Cheese-topped salad, tortillas, bread, french fries

A cheese-topped salad, tortillas, bread and even french fries! Just this much is filling and varied enough for two people.

The pulled pork and brisket are tasty on their own, but if you turn them into burgers or tortilla wraps, you get a rich mix of flavors in a single bite.

How does the shrimp rosé ravioli pasta (16,000 won) taste?

The shrimp rosé ravioli pasta is ₩16,000, and I ordered it because it's one of Modak Texas Barbecue's best-selling dishes. They had lots of pastas, but folks, this one is a strong recommendation too.

The square ravioli were soaked through with the rosé sauce and cheese, and scooping them up one by one was jmt (short for "jjin-jja mat-itda", meaning insanely delicious)!! The shrimp were big and the portion was generous. The sauce was so good that I scraped the bowl clean with a spoon.

Is Modak Texas Barbecue Dongdaegu Branch worth a return visit?

Closing photo of the meal at Modak Texas Barbecue Dongdaegu Branch

Modak Texas Barbecue, the Dongdaegu Station favorite, serves American-style barbecue with a tender texture from long smoking, in good-value sets. There are also tomahawk steaks and pastas on the menu, so it's a good date course!

It's not just varied, it's delicious too, so it's a place I want to go back to. It's a 5-minute walk from Dongdaegu Station and easy to reach, so do give it a try. I ate really well today again. :-)
