Songdo, Incheon brunch restaurant: burrata truffle pasta at Paninaro

Paninaro is a brunch and pasta restaurant in the Jiwell Prugio City shopping arcade near Incheon National University Station in Songdo, Incheon, run by a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef. At Paninaro, the signature brigaji panini (₩14,500) comes generously served with salad and cold pasta, and the truffle mushroom pasta (₩18,000) has a thick cream sauce, a strong truffle aroma and a whole burrata on top. Paninaro is well worth a stop for brunch or an atmospheric dinner in Songdo.

Bucheon pizzeria for sun-dried shrimp & bacon potato: Cheesewave

Cheesewave Bucheon City Hall is a pizza restaurant in the Hyundai Department Store food alley near City Hall Station in Bucheon, opened by Cheesewave, a pizza brand that started at UPP in Itaewon. The writer ordered a half-and-half sun-dried shrimp and bacon potato pizza, which came on 48-hour aged butter dough with a thick tomato sauce, and boxed the leftovers at the self-service bar. Thanks to the solid dough and sauce, both flavors at Cheesewave Bucheon City Hall were satisfying.

Paju Heyri restaurant lunch: spicy scallop oil pasta, Mokushura Table

Mokushura Table is the first branch of Mokushura, a restaurant in Heyri Art Village, Paju, where you can have a full meal as well as coffee and bread. After visiting the second branch, Mokushura French Café, the writer came to Mokushura Table for lunch and ordered the scallop oil pasta (25,000 won, spice level set to spicy) and the Manjo salad topped with flank steak (25,000 won). Verdict: the calm atmosphere and green views from the window made Mokushura Table a satisfying lunch stop on a Heyri date.

Heyri Village date café in Paju: milk-ice injeolmi bingsu, Heuksadang

Heuksadang (흑사당) is a large café famous for its donuts on Heirimaeul-gil in Heyri Village, Paju, Gyeonggi. After walking around Heyri Village on a hot day, the writer cooled off at Heuksadang with an injeolmi bingsu (shaved milk ice with roasted soybean powder) and an iced Americano; the bingsu was soft and nutty, and the coffee beat expectations. Heuksadang is a good bingsu and donut café for a break during a Heyri Village date.

Paju Book City dumpling spot: date lunch & cold makguksu, Bubyeokjeong

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (부벽정평양만두) is a Pyeongyang-style dumpling restaurant on Jimok-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi. After a date at Paju Book City, we skipped Bubyeokjeong's signature Pyeongyang mandu soup and ordered the new summer Pyeongyang mul makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in broth), bibim makguksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles), Pyeongyang mandu and a half plate of arongsatae suyuk (boiled beef shank). The seasoning at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is mild yet full of savory depth, a meal worth recommending even to anyone hesitant about Pyeongyang naengmyeon.

Four & More is a large brunch café on Soraji-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi, where you can have a full meal and coffee in one place. After exploring the Paju Book City publishing district and Paju Lotte Outlets, the blogger stopped at Four & More for dinner, ordered the limited-edition truffle potato gnocchi and the lasagna, and took home bread at 30% off after 6 PM. With big windows and a different mood on every floor, Four & More is a good dinner-date spot near Paju Book City.

Gangneung souvenir café: corn sand & breakwater bread—Gangneung Sand

Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a souvenir dessert café on Seonggokgoyang-gil in Gangneung, Gangwon, and is said to be the original shop of Gangneung Sand, the sandwich cookie that won gold at the 2022 Gangneung City Tourist Souvenir Contest. On a takeaway visit, the writer bought a 10-piece box of Chodang corn sand for 17,000 won and a 7-piece box of coffee-flavored breakwater bread for 10,000 won, and enjoyed the gourmet butter cookie flavor and rich coffee aroma. Pick two different flavors at Gangneung Sand Main Branch and you get a Gangneung travel gift with two tastes.

Gimpo Korean BBQ for one, pork belly set in 4 flavors: Donpu The Grill

Donpu The Grill (돈푸 더 그릴) is a fire-grilled Korean BBQ restaurant in the Janggi-dong eatery alley of Gimpo, Gyeonggi, serving one-person meat set meals at lunch. On a weekday lunch the writer had the fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) set and the fire-grilled aged pork belly set (original flavor). Both arrive fully grilled from the kitchen with stew, banchan (side dishes) and unlimited lettuce and wrap vegetables. For a tidy solo pork belly meal in Gimpo Hangang New Town without a tabletop grill, Donpu The Grill's one-person set is a great fit.

Chuncheon fusion Korean date dinner, bibim makguksu: Hyeondae Memil

Hyeondae Memil (현대메밀) is a fusion Korean makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant near Exit 1 of Namchuncheon Station in Chuncheon. On a weekday at 7 PM, after a wait of about 10 minutes, we shared bibim makguksu (buckwheat noodles mixed in sauce), a half-kimchi, half-gondeure (Korean thistle) buckwheat jeonbyeong platter and low-temperature-aged sous vide pork tenderloin suyuk. Hyeondae Memil's seasoning is gentle and its portions are generous, making it a filling stop on a Chuncheon date.

Dakgalbi restaurant in Chuncheon: Hoengseong deodeok set at Hwagye

Hwagye Dakgalbi (화계닭갈비) is a dakgalbi (marinated grilled chicken) restaurant in Sinbuk-eup, Chuncheon, where diners choose between griddle and charcoal-grilled dakgalbi under one roof. Instead of the griddle version common in Seoul, the writer ordered the Hwagye Dakgalbi charcoal set in salt and soy sauce flavors. The set came with Hoengseong grilled deodeok (a mountain root), and the writer added makguksu (buckwheat noodles) made from domestic buckwheat. Verdict: the charcoal dakgalbi at Hwagye Dakgalbi was juicy, tender and free of gamey smell, and the grilled deodeok was the standout.

Guwol-dong Korean restaurant for parents: yeolmu noodle set, Hantiok

Hantiok is a Korean set-meal (bansang) restaurant on B1 of Lotte Department Store Incheon in Guwol-dong, Michuhol, Incheon. At Hantiok, the bossam (boiled pork) set costs 22,000 won and the yeolmu noodle (young radish kimchi noodle) set costs 18,000 won, and an extra side of jeyuk (stir-fried pork) adds 6,000 won. The meat portions were generous and the seasoning mild, making Hantiok a department store restaurant worth taking your parents to, not just a place for a quick bite.

Songdo sushi restaurant for an anniversary: Sushi Doku The Songdo

Sushi Doku The Songdo is an authentic aged-sushi restaurant on the 2nd floor of Onesta Mall in Songdo, Incheon. For an anniversary, the Premium Sushi Special Set (10pc) came with the chef explaining each piece, from flounder and red sea bream to ankimo (monkfish liver), plus generous sides of salad, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), karaage, shrimp tempura and udon. Waits are common at Sushi Doku The Songdo, so book through CatchTable or consider takeout or delivery; it is a solid pick for a special occasion.
