Today I'm bringing you a story about a lovely space where you can soak up a calm, old-Seoul atmosphere in the middle of the city and create a one-of-a-kind scent of your own. This is my honest, firsthand review of Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop (무화원 향수공방), a hot spot where traditional beauty meets trendy style!
It's perfect if you want to break out of the usual café-and-movie date and make a more special memory. If you love touring perfume workshops in Seoul, or you're planning a Bukchon date course where you and your partner can stroll hand in hand and unwind, please pay attention to this post! I'll start with useful info like the exact location, parking and opening hours, then go through the moments that impressed me while blending my own perfume.

Where is Muhwawon Perfume Workshop, and what about parking and hours?
Muhwawon Bukchon Perfume Workshop is at 23 Yulgok-ro 6-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul (3rd floor). It's open daily 12:00–22:00 and is 100% reservation only. There's no dedicated parking, so I recommend public transport. Here are the basics, so you don't make the trip for nothing.
- Address: 23 Yulgok-ro 6-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, 3rd floor
- Subway: It's about 3–4 minutes on foot from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station, where Lines 1, 3 and 5 all meet, so access is excellent. It's also very close to Exit 4 of Anguk Station (Line 3), so it's a great spot to reach by wandering slowly through the pretty hanok (traditional Korean house) alleys.
- Parking: Sadly, the building has no parking of its own. The Jongno and Bukchon area has narrow alleys and strict parking enforcement, so if you're driving you'll need to use a paid lot nearby, such as the Jongmyo parking lot or the public lot near Seosunra-gil. The station area has great transit connections, so I really recommend coming by subway or bus!
- Hours: Daily 12:00–22:00 (because of the nature of the program, it runs on 100% reservations, so booking before you go is a must!)

What is the atmosphere like at Muhwawon?
Muhwawon was reportedly inspired by the mysterious morning mist rising over the Secret Garden (Huwon) of Changdeokgung Palace! Its signature is a lineup of fragrance materials that reinterpret Korean scents, like hanji (traditional Korean paper), traditional herbal medicine and wild grape.
Maybe that's why, from the moment I opened the door, a calming, luxurious scent drifted around me and put me in a great mood. Thanks to the stylish interior where tradition meets modern trends, everywhere I looked was a photo spot. Besides the usual Western fragrance materials, there was a very distinctive lineup that elegantly reinterprets the most Korean scents, including hanji, traditional herbal medicine and sweet-tart wild grape, and I found it fascinating and new!
As a Bukchon perfume workshop near Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, it's full of oriental mood, so it would make a special, memorable visit with a foreign friend who wants to experience Korean beauty. I understood right away, the moment I stepped in, why it's so well known as a classy, unusual date spot.

What can you make at Muhwawon Perfume Workshop?
At Muhwawon you can customize your own signature perfume, a car air freshener, or a diffuser to fill a room with scent, all to your taste. The class runs on a smart self-blending system: one-on-one custom care from a professional perfumer plus a tablet guide at every seat.
Thanks to that, even beginners can enjoy the class privately and in a well-structured way, without worrying about other people's eyes or pace. The space is cozy and comfortable, so I thought it makes a charming Bukchon date course where couples can focus on each other and connect.

How long does the perfume-making class take, and how does it go?
I chose perfume making, the most popular course at Muhwawon, and the whole experience took about 1 hour 30 minutes, nicely full and tightly paced. The order is consultation → taste chart → smelling → blending.
When you sit down, the kind perfumer first walks you through the structure of a scent and the basics of perfume blending, very simply and carefully. Starting with the scent families you usually like, you fill in a chart step by step with your tastes and the mood you want your final scent to have today (for example, cozy or cool and fresh).
There were so many scents, and the shop was so prettily Korean, I loved it!!
After that, you smell dozens of top, middle and base note materials one by one on scent strips and finally settle on the ones you love. When blending, you can focus alone and find your own ratios by feel, and if you get stuck you can talk it through with the perfumer and build the balance together, so even a beginner has almost zero chance of failing!

From the consultation to every step of blending, it was so interesting and fun that I got totally absorbed and lost track of time. Even among well-made perfume workshops in Seoul, the satisfaction level of this curriculum was top tier.

Sniffing around to find the scent I like and want to make, haha, it was so, so much fun!

Can you blend perfume if you know nothing about it?
I knew nothing about perfume, but learning how it's made, the many scents and the principles behind them was so much fun. The perfumer taught me one-on-one very kindly, so it was easy to learn comfortably.

Choosing the scent you want, or one you'd like to give as a gift to a partner who suits it, and pouring a precious memory into every drop, the whole process felt really meaningful and romantic. When the class ends, they wrap the finished perfume so luxuriously and prettily that your eyes go wide, and it feels like giving yourself a very special present.

What does the Muhwawon review event offer?
When I visited, Muhwawon was running a Naver receipt review event. If you write a simple review, they let you make an extra car air freshener yourself!
I got a perfume and a pretty air freshener as a bonus, so it was a doubly happy, meaningful time. When you visit, definitely join the review event and claim the benefit!

You learn how each type of scent feels, and they kindly help you find the feel you want, so even a beginner can have fun!

Testing scents, mixing them and adjusting the ratios, the scent changed so dramatically with the ratio that it was so much fun, haha!

What Bukchon and Jongno date spots are near Muhwawon?
Right near Muhwawon, Bukchon Hanok Village, Seosunra-gil, the Ikseon-dong alleys and Insa-dong are all within walking distance. That makes it a hot-spot hub that's perfect for planning a date route before or after the workshop.
Starting from the tranquil Bukchon Hanok Village, there's trendy Seosunra-gil, the cute Ikseon-dong alleys, and Insa-dong, where Korean tradition lives on, all clustered together. The location is just fantastic!

Muhwawon is a well-made Bukchon perfume workshop where you can share a one-of-a-kind scent and build deep memories in a stylish, refined space. This coming weekend, why not take someone special or a foreign friend, soak up the palace atmosphere of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, take some fragrant photos, and try an unusual one-day class at Muhwawon, the crowning touch of a Bukchon date course? I strongly recommend it as a unique date spot where you can carry away your feelings for each other along with the scent!
