Café off Sinnonhyeon Exit 1: red bean bingsu and egg tart, Cafe Ssum

In short

Cafe Ssum is a dessert café tucked into an alley near Exit 1 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Seocho, Seoul. Two friends shared a snow ice red bean bingsu (shaved milk ice) and a Portuguese-style egg tart with iced americano at Cafe Ssum, and the silky milk ice, the crisp pastry tart and the owner's kindness stood out most. Close to the station and photogenic, Cafe Ssum is a great spot near Sinnonhyeon Station for dessert and a long chat.

How does the snow ice bingsu taste at Cafe Ssum?

At Cafe Ssum I ordered the snow ice bingsu (shaved ice dessert) along with the egg tart together. Sitting and looking around, the dessert menu caught my eye, and I picked it — the look of it alone was absolutely perfect.

The snow ice bingsu had a heap of white milk ice that melted smoothly the moment it hit my mouth — such a perfect texture! The sweet, chewy red bean paste and nutty injeolmi (rice cake) powder combo went so well together (๑'◡'๑) The ice itself was infused with a rich, nutty milk flavor, so even eating just the ice without the red bean was sweet and delicious enough! The generous portion was satisfying.

Cafe Ssum's snow ice bingsu comes in quite a generous portion, perfect for sharing between two, and it stays soft and unmelted right up to the last spoonful.

When you eat it warm in one bite, the crispy pastry texture comes through perfectly. It feels like a sweet, nutty flavor wraps around your whole mouth! I really found my favorite tart ever.

Pairing with the americano

Do I even need to explain how well the bitter, cool americano pairs with the egg tart? It's such a perfect match with coffee that you just keep going back for more! Cafe Ssum's coffee has a rich, clean aroma too, so it goes well with sweet desserts.
