On a Sunday evening, my wife and I visited Jagaljip Pyeongnae (자갈집 평내점) in Pyeongnae-dong, Namyangju. I'd been craving samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) for a while, so we showed up around 7:30pm. We were a little surprised even before walking in.

Sunday 7:30pm at Jagaljip Pyeongnae: all 7 tables full

It's a cozy restaurant with about 7 tables, and every single one was full. We asked staff how long we'd have to wait, and they said about 15 minutes, so we waited outside.

But it wasn't just us — other customers kept lining up behind us too.

Waiting outside Jagaljip Pyeongnae on a Sunday evening

Looking around at nearby restaurants and BBQ places, some were closed and the ones that were open were fairly quiet, yet Jagaljip alone was packed. 'What could taste so good that people are lining up on a Sunday evening?' While waiting, I got more and more curious about the pork belly here. I'd come looking for a good samgyeopsal spot in Pyeongnae-dong, and seeing an actual wait form made my expectations climb little by little. After a short wait, a table opened up and we were seated — lucky enough to get a window seat, which made the mood even better.

Jagaljip Pyeongnae menu and prices

Once we sat down, the menu prices really caught my eye. Given today's dining costs, everything — the pork belly, the meal menu, even the drinks — felt fairly affordable overall.

  • Fresh pork neck 180g ₩9,900

Above all, fresh pork belly and fresh pork neck at ₩9,900 each for 180g felt like top-tier value. And it's not just cheap — they serve certified Korean pork (Handon), which was reassuring too.

My wife and I ordered three servings of pork belly, doenjang stew, rice and two bottles of soju. At this price, anyone looking for a good samgyeopsal spot in Pyeongnae-dong would find it pretty appealing.

Three servings of fresh pork belly, starting with gosari (fern) on the grill

First up on the grill goes gosari (bracken fern). It reminded me of the gosari I had in Jeju — that kind of evening haha. We put our ordered pork belly on the grill and cooked it up. Once the meat started to sizzle and the savory smell rose, I remembered the time we spent waiting outside. Worth the wait after all!!

Pork belly really is best grilled golden-brown and eaten straight off the pan. We ate the well-cooked pork belly with side dishes and had a glass of soju alongside. The two of us shared three servings, and the thick-cut meat was plenty.

With doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and rice added, it made for a full dinner. Since the per-serving price wasn't a burden, we could enjoy the meat without worrying much about the bill. This might be one reason so many customers look for this Pyeongnae-dong samgyeopsal spot.

Side dishes and soju from the self-serve corner

The default side dishes were clean and simple, and if you ran out, you could just grab more from the self-serve corner yourself. Side dishes and vegetables were set up next to the register. When things got busy, we just took soju straight from the fridge ourselves and let staff know afterward. Not having to call staff every time we needed something actually made it more convenient.

Staff were friendly the whole time, and even with the place packed, we had no trouble enjoying our meal. At first I wondered, 'why is it so crowded?' but after actually eating the pork belly and experiencing the vibe, the combination of reasonable prices and fresh pork belly felt like a clear enough reason.

Looking for samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) in Pyeongnae-dong?

What stuck with me most from this visit to Jagaljip Pyeongnae was the wait and the price. Visiting at 7:30pm on a Sunday, all seven tables were full — a samgyeopsal spot where waiting is just part of the deal!! Nearby restaurants were relatively quiet, so I was curious why this place alone was so busy, and after eating there myself, it made total sense. Certified Korean pork belly at ₩9,900 for 180g, plus a meal menu and drinks that don't break the bank — a solid place to come for meat.

If you're looking for a Pyeongnae-dong samgyeopsal spot and value counts, Jagaljip is a must-visit!! We ordered pork belly this time, but the pork neck is the same ₩9,900, so I'm planning to try that next time.

How to avoid the wait: arrive at 5pm opening

That said, if you visit in the evening like we did, expect a wait, so I'd recommend giving yourself some extra time. Since they open at 5pm, showing up right at opening might be your best bet!! We visited on a Sunday evening with my wife, enjoyed pork belly with doenjang stew, rice and soju, and finished the meal in great spirits.
