Suwon Station gopchang hotpot spice levels on a date: Horangigul

In short

Horangigul Timevillas Suwon is a restaurant for gopchang and daechang (beef small and large intestine) hotpot, also called motsunabe, and Japanese rice bowl sets on the 3rd floor of Timevillas at Suwon Station in Suwon. On a date, the writer had the gopchang and daechang hotpot in regular spice (19,500 won), the original gyudon set (14,900 won) and scallion takoyaki (7,900 won), and as someone who handles spicy ramen easily found the regular level a little too mild. Verdict: spice lovers should order Horangigul's hotpot at the spicy level or higher.

Horangigul Timevillas Suwon (호랑이굴) is a gopchang (beef small intestine) and daechang (large intestine) hotpot, or motsunabe, restaurant in the 3rd-floor food court of Timevillas at Suwon Station. It's an Instagram-famous spot at Suwon Station Timevillas, Horangigul 🐯

These days it's hot and humid, so having both coffee and a meal inside a cool shopping center is the best date course. Since we wanted a good Suwon restaurant and a hot spot, we searched and visited. Here's the review!

  • Hours: 10:30 - 22:00 (last order 21:00)
  • Parking available
  • Group seats, group rooms, takeout and reservations available
  • Separate men's/women's restrooms inside the building

Horangigul started in Beomgye, Anyang, and it's an Instagram hot spot that normally meant a 1 hour 30 minute wait. The Beomgye original was even picked for the Blue Ribbon two years in a row, apparently!

If a place like that is also at nearby Suwon Station, there's no reason not to go!

Horangigul Timevillas Suwon menu and prices

The mains at Horangigul Timevillas Suwon are hotpot and Japanese-style rice bowl sets, and they also sell highballs and Asahi draft beer.

Sign explaining the origin of motsunabe at Horangigul

Daechang hotpot (motsunabe) is said to come from Koreans forcibly conscripted to Fukuoka under Japanese rule, who began boiling beef or pork offal to fill their stomachs. Japanese motsunabe has a white broth, but Horangigul reinterpreted it as a Korean-style spicy red broth, and it has apparently been much loved.

If you order a main Japanese rice bowl, it comes as a set with mini udon, seasonal greens, low-sodium pollock roe, rolled omelet, shrimp tempura and two kinds of pickles.

Horangigul's gopchang and daechang hotpot (motsunabe) has a red, spicy broth base loaded with Korean beef daechang, pork neck, fish balls, fried tofu pouches, tofu and fresh vegetables.

With the leftover broth you can finish with risotto, jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), udon or tteok noodles, and the sides include egg okonomiyaki, chicken skin gyoza, scallion takoyaki and Anpanman mini pork cutlets. It's a place I really recommend for kids and family meals as well as dates.

How is the scallion takoyaki?

Horangigul's scallion takoyaki is ₩7,900 for 8 pieces. Before that, the hotpot sauce and pickled side dishes were set out first.

Even the small plates have a cool tiger illustration and a powerful logo.

Piled with fluffy bonito flakes, and the takoyaki is packed full and soft!

How to enjoy Horangigul's daechang hotpot

To get to the noodles or risotto at Horangigul, you need to leave more than half the broth. Plan ahead, haha.

Guide to eating Horangigul daechang hotpot

Horangigul's hotpot apparently has 210g of vegetables in total (bean sprouts, mung bean sprouts, napa cabbage, green onion, onion, cabbage, tofu, chives). You get more vegetables than in most salads, so it's good for you too!!

Gopchang+daechang hotpot in regular spice: taste and portion

Horangigul's gopchang+daechang hotpot in regular spice is ₩19,500, and it arrives bubbling, so you can dig in right away.

Tofu, fried tofu pouches, daechang, gopchang, slurp slurp, it's chaos! I loved that Horangigul sells hotpot by the single portion too, so eating alone is possible.

How spicy is regular?

Horangigul's regular-spice hotpot is milder than Shin Ramyun. We ordered regular, but since we normally even eat Yeol Ramen (a spicy ramen) just fine, we regretted it: "We should've gone spicy!"

  • Mild: ordinary ramen
  • Regular: milder than Shin Ramyun
  • Spicy: Shin Ramyun
  • Extra spicy: Buldak Bokkeum Myeon (fire noodles)

Pick up the plump gopchang and daechang one piece at a time and dip them in the sauce. Chewy and tender, they melt..! Delicious with no funky smell at all!

The tofu was well seasoned and tasty, and the fish balls were chewy, so they seem to have a high fish content! And there were so many vegetables that I was happy. All the ingredients worked in harmony!

What comes with the original gyudon set?

Horangigul's original gyudon (beef rice bowl) set is ₩14,900, with a wide range of side dishes: seasonal greens and cabbage salad, shrimp tempura, rolled omelet, assorted pickles and salted seafood. You have to break the poached egg and mix it all in for the truly king-of-kings flavor!

Gasp.. it's glowing. Not fishy, nutty and moist.. and a very generous amount of rice! The rolled omelet isn't too sweet, and it's much better topped with salted pollock roe.

A dab of salted pollock roe on the gyudon set too! Much more savory depth.

And the mini udon that comes with the set! These noodles were chewy and bouncy too, so it was really filling and great value!

Is it worth recommending as a Suwon Station date restaurant?
